African Identities : Race, Nation, and Culture in Ethnography, Pan-Africanism and Black Literatures. This work locates Black identity in relation to Africa and the African diaspora. It uncovers how histories connected with the domination, imagination and interpretation of Africa are constructive of a range of political and theoretical parameters around race. The book explores the meanings generated by Africa and Blackness throughout the 20th century.
Pan-Africanism is a worldwide movement that aims to encourage and strengthen bonds of solidarity between all indigenous and diasporan ethnic groups of African descent. Based on a common goal dating back to the Atlantic slave trade, the movement extends beyond continental Africans with a substantial support base among the African diaspora in the Caribbean, Latin America, the United States and Canada and Europe.
