For over sixty years, English writer Flora Thompson (1876-1947) has been celebrated as the author of "Lark Rise to Candleford" (1945), a rural trilogy that is considered a minor classic among writings about the English countryside. Challenging the assumption that "Lark Rise to Candleford" is Thompson's only significant work, this book examines the whole of Thompson's oeuvre, including the poetry, short fiction, and essays that she published in women's periodicals before World War II, her book of poetry, "Bog Myrtle and Peat" (1921), and two posthumously published works, "Still Glides the Stream" (1947) and "Heatherley" (1979). In addition to reassessing Thompson's significance as a twentieth-century woman writer, this study explores the connections between "Lark Rise to Candleford" and the author's early work, questioning its current classification as a work of autobiography and arguing for a more nuanced, literary interpretation of this rural classic. Ruth Collette Hoffman teaches English composition and literature at the College of DuPage.
  • Hoffman's book grew out of her doctoral dissertation or perhaps is exactly the dissertation. It reads like a dissertation. It is an extremely in-depth literary analysis of what has been written about Flora Thompson's work. Hoffman's book is mostly quotes and citations, which produced a wearying effect on this reader. For fans of Thompson's lovely stories, there is next-to-nothing here to enjoy. Thompson's fans would benefit much more by reading "Flora Thompson: The Story of the Lark Rise Writer" by Gillian Lindsay. Lindsay's book leaves the reader wanting more, just as Thompson's books do.

  • If you are a student of literature interested in Flora Thompson's complete works, late 19 c working class education, or pastoral literature this is the book for you. It is a scholarly book, intended more for university libraries than the general reader. This book also states that Thompson deserves more respect for the work that she published before Lark Rise to Candleford.

For a biography of Flora Thompson, read Gillian Lindsay's wonderful book, Flora Thompson: The Story of the Lark Rise Writer.
