The Heart of Autumn Poems for the Season of Reflection. By Robert Atwan, Rosanna Warren. 38 poems that chart the rhythms of this season of change. They chart the rhythms of this season of change when the air gets cooler and crisper, the light grows more dim, the leaves blaze with color, and our thoughts turn to the transience of things. A beautiful gift book that captures autumn in all its contemplative beauty The Heart of Autumn collects some thirty masterful poems by English-language writers on the experience of reflection and introspection that occurs with the fading of the sunlight, the cooling of the earth, and the dropping of the leaves. Illustrated throughout with graceful pen-and-ink drawings of fall foliage, this volume features a selection of some of the world's most acclaimed poets from Gerard Manley Hopkins, Emily Dickinson, and William Wordsowrth to comtemporary poets including e.e. cummins, Robert Bly, and W.S. Merwin. Each poem offers readers a glimpse of the satisfying gifts that fall brings to us, and a celebration of the hallmarks of the season: the harvest, Thanksgiving, and finally, the onset of winter. The title of the book is taken from a Robert Penn Warren poem, and the introduction is a meditation on the season by his daughter, the poet Rosanna Warren. Other contributors include: Archibald MacLeish, May Sarton, Pamela Steed Hill, Yvor Winters, Edgar Lee Masters, John Keats, Mary Jo Salter, Siegfried Sassoon, Richard Wilbur, Louise Bogan, Carl Sandburg, William Butler Yeats, and more.
  • I love all kinds of poetry and have read and reviewed numerous collections. I love the spring, autumn and winter times of the year and I have also written poetry collections on those seasons. I also purchased several season focused poetry recently, including this volume (The Heart of Autumn: poems for the season of reflection selected by Robert Atwan). Even though I would not say this is a great collection of autumn poetry; nevertheless, I did like many of the poems in this 93 page volume.

Some of poems in this collection includes the following: "September" (Penelope shuttle), "Immortal Autumn" (Archibald MacLeish), "Summer begins to have the look" (Emilee Dickinson), "The Geese" (Alan Michael Parker), "Simple Autumnal" (Louise Bogan), "Autumn" (Siegfried Sassoon), "Heart of Autumn" (Robert Penn Warren), "September, 1815" (William Wordsworth), "To Autumn:" (John Keats), "Fall Time" "Autumn Movement" (Carol Sandburg), "My November Guest" (Robert Frost), "Solitude late at night in the woods" (Robert Boy).

If you love poetry about the autumn time of the year you should check out this volume.

  • Pound for pound, this collection seems to contain more poems by less famous poets than the other seasonal books in this collection, which is great, but many of these poems seem to have somewhat similar themes (a LOT of poems that mention leaves--perhaps a world record for a collection) and like another reviewer here, I have to agree that this book is a little more dull than the others. However, it's pretty good, and certainly warrants at least three stars.

  • very nice. captures autumn

  • Unlike the two previous volumes on spring and winter, THE HEART OF AUTUMN is extremely dull and dim. What happened? The cover is attractive, I like the idea of the leaf "illustrations", but the poems are not at all stimulating emotionally, nor do they lead the reader to reflection. I do hope, on the other hand, the summer volume will make up for this poor selection made for autumn--in fact, could I ask for a revised edition of the autumn volume (there have to be better poems that this...) of it instead of asking for my money back?
