The North Callahan Collection is a grouping of works produced by North Callahan throughout the time period 1940–1985 and maintained at the Lupton Library of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Carl Sandburg, 1878–1967, American poet, journalist, and biographer, b. Galesburg, Ill. The son of poor Swedish immigrants, he left school at the age of 13 and became a day laborer. He served in the Spanish-American War and, after returning to Galesburg, attended Lombard College (now Knox College). In 1902 he went to work as a newspaperman in Milwaukee. In 1908 he married Lillian Steichen, sister of the photographer Edward Steichen.

After encountering several August Johnsons in his job for the railroad, the Sandburg's father renamed the family. The Sandburgs were very poor; Carl left school at the age of thirteen to work odd jobs, from laying bricks to dishwashing, to help support his family. At seventeen, he traveled west to Kansas as a hobo. He then served eight months in Puerto Rico during the Spanish-American war.

Carl Sandburg was a famous multiple Pulitzer Prize winner writer and poet. During his lifetime, he won three Pulitzer Prizes, two for his poetry and another for a biography of Abraham Lincoln. He is also remembered for his works for children like, Rootabaga Stories and Rootabaga Pigeons. In 1959, Sandburg was awarded a Grammy Award for Best Performance - Documentary Or Spoken Word for his recording of Aaron Copland's Lincoln Portrait with the New York Philharmonic.
