Until recently, I had never heard of Loren Eiseley.

Only 12 left in stock (more on the way). Until recently, I had never heard of Loren Eiseley. I was turned on to this book by someone's blog, where they had mentioned digging it up in a bookstore somewhere and taking a chance on it. The blogger had been thoroughly impressed and as he himself was an author that I liked, I decided that the book would be worth checking out for myself. After even the first chapter, it was easy to see that Eiseley was an incredible author and that he wrote with a style that differed markedly from anyone else I'd read before.

by. Eiseley, Loren . 1907-1977. Books for People with Print Disabilities. Internet Archive Books.

Loren Eiseley (September 3, 1907 – July 9, 1977) was an American anthropologist, educator, philosopher, and natural science writer, who taught and published books from the 1950s through the 1970s. He received many honorary degrees and was a fellow of multiple professional societies. At his death, he was Benjamin Franklin Professor of Anthropology and History of Science at the University of Pennsylvania.

Loren Eiseley was born in Nebraska in 1907. An accomplished paleontologist teaching at the University of Pennsylvania, Eiseley turned late in his career to writing for a popular audience with the essay collection The Immense Journey, which became a surprise bestseller when published in 1957. It and the five collections that followed-The Firmament of Time, The Unexpected Universe, The Invisible Pyramid, The Night Country, and The Star Thrower-established him as one of America’s most beloved and distinctive naturalists. The Night Country - Loren Eiseley. He described his identity as an archaeologist as a "bone man"; The Night Country is a vivid sensory/ poetic exploration of his bone-picking. As a boy, Eisley was a hobo; as a philosopher, he illuminated the lives of dogs, the bitterness of death's fingerings, and a remarkable analysis of the impact of Christianity on civilization that is illuminative, yet not harmful, to one's secularist tendencies.

Toward the end of his life, Loren Eiseley reflected on the mystery of life, throwing light on those dark places traversed by himself and centuries of humankind

Toward the end of his life, Loren Eiseley reflected on the mystery of life, throwing light on those dark places traversed by himself and centuries of humankind. The Night Country is a gift of wisdom and beauty from the famed anthropologist. It describes his needy childhood in Nebraska, reveals his increasing sensitivity to the odd and ordinary in nature, and focuses on a career that turns him inward as he reaches outward for answers in old bones.

A distinguished anthropologist records those events of his early childhood and youth which shaped his ideas and attitudes towards life
  • One of the best and most meaningful books I've ever read. Filled with many poignant personal observations and reflections about life and death and time and nature, beautifully written prose. It has been only a few months since I discovered Loren Eiseley's writings, but I gotta say that I already think he's one of the greatest writers who ever lived. This book just might change your life.

  • Until recently, I had never heard of Loren Eiseley.

I was glued to this book from cover to cover and it was a wonderful, mysterious and thought provoking experience from beginning to end. You never know exactly where the book will take you as you read through it, but you're never disappointed by where you end up at each chapter's end.

I can't really compare this book to most others that I've read, as those aren't quite the same type of writing, but to give some sense I would say that if you like Carl Sagan, Eiseley would definitely appeal to you. It's definitely different subject matter from Sagan's work, to be sure, but in the same way that Sagan does, Eiseley provokes your thoughts and challenges you to re-evaluate your beliefs about life, nature and the human condition. Like Sagan, Eiseley will take you on a journey that you won't soon forget.

I'm definitely looking for some more work by Eisely and I would highly recommend this book to others.

  • I was surprised to see how well Eiseley translated out of the late '60s. He writes beautifully and paints an attractive and compelling portrait. I categorize his works in the same genre as Stephen J. Gould, without the acidic underlying world view. I strongly recommend this work to anyone interested in the beautiful underside of the natural world as seen by a trained observer who is obviously powerfully moved by his subject matter. The book arrived on time and in better condition than advertised.

  • Eiselely is such a moving, insightful writer. This book, and his autobiography All the Strange Hours would be in my 'marooned on a desert island' pile. I read this first 20 years ago, and never forgot the profound essay 'One Night's Dying'. You'll never forget it either.

  • For me, "The Night Country" is Eiseley's best book just because I like all the essays in it. Eiseley's life was so hard and yet he kept his humanity throughout and became a fine scientist and a great author. Eiseley's humility is also unusual among science writers. It seems his early life taught him respect for all things fragile. I return to "The Night Country" often, to hear Eiseley's voice again.

  • Eiseley's dark side... It's a great read if you enjoyed The Invisible Pyramid or The Immense Journey essays, as this book gives you a look at the crepuscular side of Eiseley's mind-things that go bump in the night.

  • Track down and read all of Loren Eiseley's books. In The Night Country, Eiseley, one of the last century's premier thinkers, writers, and poets, writes beautifully and thoughtfully of his boyhood, lost civilizations, and the beauties of evolution. This is a deeply moving book that you will long remember.

  • Great book
