John Singleton (c. 1793-1877), a young Irishman and Oxford graduate, kept a detailed journal while making the Grand Tour at the end of the Napoleonic Wars. What he saw on his tour 1815-17 and recorded in his journal was determined largely by what he had read in his extensive library of 621 titles back in Ireland. His journal contains 109 citations, most of them quotations, from 64 different titles in his library

John Singleton Copley RA (1738 – September 9, 1815) was an Anglo-American painter, active in both colonial America and England. He was probably born in Boston, Massachusetts, to Richard and Mary Singleton Copley, both Anglo-Irish. After becoming well-established as a portrait painter of the wealthy in colonial New England, he moved to London in 1774, never returning to America.
