This short book by Robert Wokler is an excellent introduction to Rousseau's thought. I was mainly interested in Rousseau's political thought, but Wokler does an excellent job weaving Rousseau's life, his politics, and his other intellectual pursuits into an integrated whole

It is, after all, a part of the Very Brief Introduction series. How else is he supposed to be dealt with? The book has some problems, but brevity is not one of them. I read this largely because I like to read one of the books in the Very Short Introduction series as I walk about doing errands (or just taking a walk - yes, I have the odd habit of reading while I walk) during the work week. They are very light and easy to carry around and feel nice to the hand. I bring this up because it explains why I read this rather than another book in the series.

One of the most profound thinkers of modern history, Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-78) was a central figure of the European Enlightenment. He was also its most formidable critic, condemning the political, economic, theological, and sexual trappings of civilization along lines that would excite the enthusiasm of romantic individualists and radical revolutionaries alike

One of the most profound thinkers of modern history, Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-78) was a central figure of the European Enlightenment. He was also its most formidable critic, condemning the political, economic, theological, and sexual trappings of civilization along lines that would excite the enthusiasm of romantic individualists and radical revolutionaries alike. In this study of Rousseau's life and works, Robert Wolker shows how his philosophy of history, his theories of music and politics, his fiction, educational, and religious writings, and even his botany, were all inspired by revolutionary ideals of mankind's self-realization in a condition of unfettered freedom. He explains how, in regressing to classical republicanism, ancient mythology, direct communication with God, and solitude, Rousseau anticipated some post-modernist rejections of the Enlightenment as well.
  • I like the Very Short Introduction series, especially the one about Plato by UA professor Julia Annas Plato: A Very Short Introduction

I loved this one about Rousseau. I was able to quickly get what else by and about Rousseau I want to read. I am especially curious about this natural state that humans are in, prior to being enculturated, civilized or "Cizzlized" as Mark Twain has Huck Finn say...

  • I wanted to know what the fuss was about Rousseau without, you know, ACTUALLY READING ROUSSEAU! Does the job very well. I'm not sure whether I now want to pick up Emile or Heloise, but I felt a lot of sparks go off when I began to connect what Rousseau was saying with thinkers I know better, like Emerson.
