Elizabeth Gaskell was born on September 29, 1810 to a Unitarian clergyman, who was also a civil servant and journalist. Her mother died when she was young, and she was brought up by her aunt in Knutsford, a small village that was the prototype for Cranford, Hollingford and the setting for numerous other short stories. In 1832, she married William Gaskell, a Unitarian clergyman in Manchester. She participated in his ministry and collaborated with him to write the poem Sketches among the Poor in 1837.

It is asserted that the inspiration for Elizabeth Gaskell's marvellous stories of Cranford was her childhood home of Knutsford, a small town in Cheshire and to where she returned for a while as a young woman. This assertion is born out by an essay she wrote in 1849 entitled The Last Generation in England, in which she writes about "The town in which I once resided. There can be little doubt when reading this that it provided her with the template for Cranford. In 1851 the year she began to write Cranford, she also wrote a novella entitled Mr. Harrison's Confessions

Mr Harrison’s arrival is noted immediately by all the key inhabitants of the town, and as soon as he has put his bag down in the lodgings arranged by Mr Morgan, he is visited several times. Elizabeth Gaskell’s novels and stories often depict the realities of life for people in Victorian England, and this is no exception. I love Gaskell;s work but her books are so huge! This might be a good way to get back into her books! on June 23, 2015 at 11:30 am Reply heavenali. Yes this is a lovely small one to get back to her with.

Because, Elizabeth Gaskell’s Mr Harrison’s Confessions are the reminiscences of a middle-aged country doctor, who, when a visiting acquaintance asks him how he came to be settled in this part of the country and married to a woman he so obviously very happy with, recounts his early days in the village. Come to act as assistant to the much-established Dr Morgan, Mr Harrison follows his boss’s earnest strictures to cultivate a sympathetic, loving and listening bedside manner-with startling results.

Harrisons Confessions book.

Название книги: Mr. Автор: Элизабет Гаскелл. I put my book down, and sprang up to receive him. He stood, hat and cane in hand. I came to inquire if it would be convenient for you to accompany me on my morning’s round, and to be introduced to a few of our friends.

"Narrating the courting done by the protagonist, this is a charming tale. With a light-hearted atmosphere prevailing over the complete narration, the work captures the fancy of the reader with its romantic depiction of the events. With brilliantly drawn characters and a well-knitted plot, this is an amazing work."
  • Elizabeth Gaskell has in "Mr. Harrison's Confessions" created a small comedic masterpiece of mid-19th century England, very much in the mode of the "Cranford" stories. A young, single, and handsome doctor joins a medical practice in a rural English village, only to fall afoul of virtually every single female in town.

Mr. Harrison, having just completed his medical residency in London, takes up an offer from a Mr. Morgan to share the older man's medical practice in the small rural village of Duncombe. Mr. Harrison must acquire both a bedside manner and the particular customs of the village through trial and error. His friendly manner, coupled with the hijinks of a visiting friend, leave him inadvertantly engaged to three different women in the village while shunned by the one woman he does care for. Only a supreme medical crisis enables the young Mr. Harrison to begin to resurrect his fortunes.

Gaskell cleverly presents the story through the first person narration of Mr. Harrison. Through a series of misunderstandings and ill-fated good intentions, a building romantic crisis is probably visible to the reader long before it dawns on the unfortunate Mr. Harrison. The result is a mounting sense of comedic horror, which is neatly resolved by the final page of the story.

"Mr. Harrison's Confessions" was seamlessly folded into the Masterpiece Theater presentation of "Cranford" in the Spring of 2008. The original story is here told unabridged and very highly recommended as good entertainment to fans of Elizabeth Gaskell and her authentic and humorous portrayal of rural England.

  • Love this book! And I love Gaskell's writing. She is personable, makes endearing characters, and gives them the ability to laugh at themselves. The predicament Mr. Harrison finds himself in by simply being a friendly (and handsome) young man is funny and sad at the same time. Knowing myself how hard it can be to acclimate to a new environment, I understood how the doctor felt in trying to make friends and be personable. His story is very entertaining and enjoyable! Another great book by Gaskell is Cranford. Such a funny and engaging story.

  • Delightful story. I read it because I knew it was one of the 3 novels they used to develop the Cranford mini series. Mrs. Gaskell does not disappoint! It really comes across as a 19th RomCom!

  • Gaskell's story is superb--funny, sweet, and a little sad, but this edition was maddening in the number of typos and in the layout. The dialogue was presented in a very amatuerish fashion, and the paragraphing and use of italics was inconsistent and awkward.

  • I thoroughly enjoy everything Elizabeth Gaskell wrote. This is another one of those bedtime books to read just before dropping off to sleep. Mrs. Gaskell writes lovely stuff.

  • This should be required reading for students of Literature and/or writing to help them develop their own personal writing style. It's short but very sweet and entertaining.

  • Mr. Harrison's Confessions, is the continuation of one character from, "Cranford".
This is a very good short story, especially if you have read the book or seen the movie, "Cranford."

  • I am giving this particular printing of Gaskell's novella one star because of the sloppy editing (or lack of) of this book. Did anyone even bother proofreading the story before putting it in print? Shameful.
