The Best Awful takes Suzanne back to the edge with a new set of troubles-not the least of which is that . Well-written l novel with Carrie Fisher's signature wit and insight into the period in her life when she had a psychotic break.

The Best Awful takes Suzanne back to the edge with a new set of troubles-not the least of which is that her studio executive husband turned out to be gay and has left her for a man. Lonely for a man herself, Suzanne decides that her medication is cramping her style, and she goes off her meds-with disastrous results. Her description of that period is a combination of frightening, sad, and (of course) funny.

Based on a truant's story, "The Best Awful" is Carrie Fisher's most powerful and revealing novel: hilarious, moving, and fully informed by the wisdom of a true survivor. The difficulties of a Hollywood star bleed through the pages of this book, though it is as though Fisher wants to excuse the behaviour that comes with the pressure of life under the microscope.

The Best Awful There Is (retitled The Best Awful as a paperback), is a 2004 novel by actress and author Carrie Fisher published in 2004. It is a sequel to her debut novel Postcards from the Edge. Like most of Fisher's books, this novel is l and fictionalizes events from her real life. The book features the protagonist character Suzanne Vale that first appeared in Postcards from the Edge.

PEOPLE Magazine Best Book of the Fall. The Princess Diarist is Carrie Fisher's intimate, hilarious and revealing recollection of what happened behind the scenes on one of the most famous film sets of all time, the first Star Wars movie. When Carrie Fisher recently discovered the journals she kept during the filming of the first Star Wars movie, she was astonished to see what they had preserved-plaintive love poems, unbridled musings with youthful naiveté, and a vulnerability that she barely recognized.

I can't remember a book with a more harrowing and hilarious depiction of the inside of a bipolar mind, and leavened as it is with comic gunfire and celebrity mayhem, it's more affecting in the end than "Girl, Interrupted. com User, January 21, 2004.

Carrie Fisher's latest novel comes with a glowing endorsement from her New Best Friend, Graham Norton. The book begins with Suzanne Vale, the loud-mouthed, messed-up actress heroine from Postcards, pondering a problem: "She'd had a child with someone who forgot to tell her he was gay. He forgot to tell her, and she forgot to notice.

A woman struggles to cope with a descent into psychosis and to make her way through a challenging stay in a psychiatric institution to build a new life for herself.
  • When we left Suzanne Vale at the end of Carrie Fisher’s bestselling Postcards from the Edge, she had survived drug abuse, rehab, and Hollywood celebrity. The Best Awful takes Suzanne back to the edge with a new set of troubles—not the least of which is that her studio executive husband turned out to be gay and has left her for a man.

Lonely for a man herself, Suzanne decides that her medication is cramping her style, and she goes off her meds—with disastrous results. The “manic” side of the illness convinces her it would be a good idea to get a tattoo, cut off her hair, and head to Mexico with a burly ex-con and a stash of OxyContin. As she wakes up in Tijuana, the “depressive” side kicks in, leading Suzanne through a series of surreal psychotic episodes before landing her in a mental hospital. With the help of her movie star mom, a circle of friends, and even her ex-husband, she begins the long journey back to sanity.

My Thoughts: What I enjoy most about Suzanne Vale is her fierce desire to move beyond life’s disappointments. Certainly she finds herself up to her neck in alligators after the disappointment of her marriage. Even her joy at having her daughter Honey does not quite take the edge off of how much she hates being wrong about her ex-husband.

She has done pretty well at staying off the drugs, until…Yes, going off of the bipolar medication is a familiar tale for those with the illness. Life seems less wonderful when the journey turns flat and joyless.

How does Suzanne’s quest for a new man, while enjoying the ups and downs she experiences without the medications, turn into disaster? How does she find herself sliding down the surreal rabbit hole once again?

The Best Awful: A Novel is a fictionalized tale filled with some of the author’s own experiences. As a result, we are gifted with an authentic journey through the meltdowns, the chaos, and life in a mental hospital. Fisher knows firsthand what her protagonist is going through, and we are rooting for Suzanne as she struggles. I enjoyed this book, although it wasn’t my favorite from the author. 4.5 stars.

  • I really loved Wishful Drinking and Shockaholic, so I decided to get one of her novels. It was very different and not nearly as entertaining. It's more gritty and dark and not so much fun. She tries to write with humor wherever possible, but the facts of life for someone with bipolar disorder is really no picnic. I don't plan to read any more of her novels. but I am eagerly anticipating The Princess Diaries.

  • Great writing...about her life, in thin disguise...Very eventful and sad, yet a good show of womanly endurance in the face of stupid male rejection for reasons she can never fathom...sad in that respect...but beautiful writing...True to herself, her characters and sad.

  • Well-written semi-autobiographical novel with Carrie Fisher's signature wit and insight into the period in her life when she had a psychotic break. Her description of that period is a combination of frightening, sad, and (of course) funny. Very apt title!

  • It was a really great read. Carrie Fisher did a wonderful job of portraying what it's like in the head of a bi-polar. She does it with grace, and so much humor.

  • I just couldn't get into this novel which is unlike me when it comes to Carrie Fisher. Sad that I disliked it so much that I had to give up on reading it.

  • Disarmingly honest, raw, painful. Yet, told in Ms. Fisher's trademark brilliant wit, she unwraps her story ever so carefully, keeping the reader absolutely transfixed on each and every word. You will laugh hysterically, wince uncomfortably, and inevitably cry at the unimaginable loss of this of this extraordinary woman.

  • Not my favorite Carrier Fisher book (God rest her.)
