Signet Books was an imprint of the New American Library (NAL), which was established as an autonomous American publishing house after branching off from its British-based parent company, Penguin Books. Signet had the longest running Regency series, beginning in the late 1970s and ending in February 2006. It generally published three books each month, though this varied over the years. Signet also produced reissues, both of their own previous releases as well as those of other publishers.

Emma Kendrick refuses to sit by and watch while her beloved younger sister Charmian weds the Earl of Somerville, a man who Emma is certain will live up to his roguish reputation
  • "The Wicked Corinthian" by Eileen Jackson 1990
Emma Kendrick's father had died leaving a ton of debts. While they were paying off some of them, others were demanding payment immediately. Her mother was the guardian of the heir, her eldest son and thus she was the one to go to debtor's prison. What were they to do? Her younger sister, Charmian was a beauty. If she had a season in London, it was a given she would find a wealthy husband even without a dowry.
After everyone in the family pooled their money, they were ready to set their plan in motion, but right after they started for London, they came upon an accident of an overturned stage which was caused by some wild corinthian taking over the reins of the stage coach. They had to spend some of their precious fund to stay overnight at an inferior inn.
So when Emma went out to the stables late that night (with only her cloak over her nightgown) because she was worried about her elderly coachman, she ran into the man who had caused her and her family and many others injury and a lot of expense and trouble. Thinking she was a maid, a servant, he flirted with her and she found herself caught up in his arms and kissed by him. She wasn't going to speak at first but her temper got the best of her and she told him what she thought of him acting so reckless to endanger others. He realized his mistake because her speech was that of a Lady not a servant.
At their first ball, she met up with him, the notorious Earl of Somerville. Somerville started to show favoritism to Charmian and her mother was in alt because Somerville was handsome and wealthy.
Emma started to rethink what she and her family were doing. Was it right to sell Charmin in marriage with this Earl of Infamy?
Is he the answer to their prayers or is it the beginning of nightmare for Emma as she believed she is coming under his spell. Another good story from Eileen Jackson. Happy Reading!

  • This book frustrated me. The heroine, Emma, is constantly jumping to negative conclusions about the hero, even though she is represented as a level-headed person not given to listening to gossip. She is constantly scolding him for imagined faults and I honestly couldn't read a few of the conversations between them, because she looks so rude and foolish. I couldn't imagine what he saw in her.

To be fair, he does seem awfully coarse in the first chapter, but this is completely at odds with his character throughout the rest of the book and with his apparently chivalrous nature.

It is one of the old-fashioned style novels in which there is misunderstanding and tension until three pages from the end of the book when suddenly new information is revealed, declarations are made and all is well.
