Quoted in The Bibliophile's Devotional: 365 Days of Literary Classics, by Hallie Ephron, at page 1. Although Joyce left Dublin, the city really never left him. He frequently wrote about his hometown, obsessing over exact details. He frequently wrote about his hometown, obsessing over exact details and locations of houses. One of the things I could never get accustomed to in my youth was the difference I found between life and literature. Joyce spent his writing career trying to fix that difference. He brought into the open what people think in private by using a literary device we call interior monologue. Joyce did not have good eyesight. Peter Costello, a Joyce scholar, thinks that fact impacted his writing

  • A fun book for any voracious reader (including yourself). Each day of the year spends a page with a short synopsis and why-it's-important about a different classic novel. This calender isn't associated with a specific year, so it can be used year after year until you complete all the novels.

The novels featured in the devotional seem to be chosen straight out of "1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die" and we found some of them a little trite (James Joyce, etc). But that's a minor complaint compared to what your getting.

If you love to read and especially if you like a little inspiration to pick up that next "classic" novel, this is a fabulous find.

I'll be picking up a couple extra copies for my reading-nut friends and family this year, too.

  • Book has paper with a nice feel to it with a rougher textured and torn like edges and is beige. Besides the feel of the book, it is helpful because it offers better quality reading material to help pick out a book that one might like to read. There is a review of different book every day, so there are 365 reviews. It is useful to me to find something I would like to read via this method rather than blindly picking up a fictional book at random from the shelves in the library and reading a page or two to see what it is about, and then that too gives only a narrow perspective. Each review of a novel is only one page or a couple of paragraphs long and it gives the whole picture of what a book is about.

  • This is a fun book set up to be read as a devotional - read a page a day for the entire year. I read this book straight through within a couple days. I found it fun to read the authors take on books I have read and enjoyed. I also read the devotional for books I didn't like and remembered why I didn't finish them. Also in this book are devotionals for books that I passed by for whatever reason and now will go back to try again. It's also fun to read about your favorite books. For anyone looking for a book to read, get this devotional and you're sure to find a story for two you can't wait to read.

  • I love books and books about books.

  • This book just made it very easy for me to complete my holiday shopping for all my book-y pals. What a clever little volume this is - the perfect thing to pick up every day and either thumb through or stick to the calendar. You think you're going to read just one entry, then you move on to that one you saw a couple of pages on and read that too, and then you think of that favorite author and wonder if her book is listed... I'm bringing this to my book group, too. Very fun!

  • The book itself is very good, provides an excellent selection -- but the Kindle version is absolutely riddled with typos and format errors, one or more on most pages. If this is fixed, my rating goes to 5 stars.

  • I love lists of books. I enjoy looking at books with lists, articles, and seasonal listings of books to see what are favorites, different categories, classics, must read, and newest books on the scene. I love reading and checking lists to see what I have read and get ideas for what I'd like to read

  • I thought the book was subtracts of original classics. It turns out it is re-written of the classics. Still it makes a good gift.
