The most important shorter writings of Harry Sawyerr, until now generally not available to scholars, are collected in this volume together with an introductory essay by Andrew Walls on the significance of Sawyerr's life and work.Selected by Harry Sawyerr himself before his death in 1987, these seminal papers are representative of Sawyerr's enormous contribution to the study of African religions and theology. The first group of essays deals with the study of West African religions and covers such topics as the numinous in nature, the self, and spiritual beings; the religious interpretation of the abnormal; ancestor worship; and death, the soul, and healing. The second group of essays deals with more theological issues. Sawyerr's influential What Is African Theology? is reprinted in full, and also included are papers on the basis for doing theology, soteriology, and mission.
