James, the Connoisseur Cat book. However, one-fifth of the way through, Harriet Hahn found her way, and James the Connoisseur Cat improved somewhat, but the slim novel never rose above adequate. James, a whiskey-swilling, I love cats - really, I do. I’ve had up to seven at a time, quite a few of them strays, although it’s safe to say none of them were like James.

James falls in love with a porcelain cat and recovers jewels for Lord Henry, whose romance with the painter Helena-her show is rescued by James, who paints her an abstract piece-has a happy ending in the ancestral home. Like the comics Garfield or Heathcliff, the silver cat James, in this excruciatingly whimsical tale of a brainy feline, is a cat only in (what we interpret as) giant ego and vanity. Like his cartoon counterparts, James is merely an irritating human in fur- but, unlike them, he has classy tastes. The narrator, an agent in the fine-arts business, meets James for the first time in his London apartment house.

James the Connoisseur Cat: A Novel. The delightful crime-solving and aristocratic social adventures of an American antiques expert and a British feline with finesse. It’s love at first sight when a businessman visiting London meets a silver-gray cat named James in the lobby of his apartment house. I am a "Cat Who" fan and look forward to another book but I don't think that will happen.

James, Fabulous Feline: Further Adventures of a Connoisseur Cat. The Cat Who is a success. com User, January 30, 2010. I am a "Cat Who" fan and look forward to another book but I don't think that will happen.

An American gentleman and his very proper English cat, James, form the perfect partnership as they attend London auctions, visit art galleries, and witness the marriage of a lord
  • Well, I am a long-time cat person, so I was intrigued by this title as well as James’ portrait on the cover.

I soon was charmed by the British silver-grey cat named James and his good friends who introduce him to the good life (which he embraces wholeheartedly). Not sure my veterinarian would approve of James’ penchant for saucers of single-malt whiskey or his taste for gourmet ultra-rich foods. But this is a light-hearted book, so if you take it in that spirit and you like cats, this is a charming read.

It’s true that some of James’ exploits strain credibility. But at least the author does not have James actually talking to people, as is the case in some detective stories featuring feline sleuths.

If you like cats, and just want a little light reading with some amusing moments, this is a good book for you. I enjoyed it, although the the story does run a trifle thin on plot and drama at times.

I gave it five stars because, as noted above, I am a cat person and for me it was a fun read. Someone who is not a cat person would likely not be amused for long, and would probably award fewer stars.

  • Very strange and not in a good way. The book was free and I downloaded it because I love cats. Not this one though. I kept reading it thinking something would happen that would help me understand why anyone would write a book about a cat who drinks tea and wine but it never happened. Total waste of time. I believe there is a sequel so someone out there must have bought this thing and liked it.

  • This is an exceptionally delightful book. Read it and book #2 during an 19 hour power failure - thank you Kindle app. Kept me turning the pages and kept me from being frustrated with the lack of other power. It is a fun read. I have fallen totally in love with James. I especially appreciate his taste in scotch as I was never a scotch drinker until I found Laphroaig. (spelling?).
The interaction among all the characters is entertaining, especially when there are attempts to deny James access to various venues. Read it and enjoy. It will take you out of yourself, relax you and give you a mini-vacation.
also read the next James book - equally enjoyable. So far have only found 2 books for this series but hope there are or will be more.

  • I gave this book five stars for its simplicity, good use of language and image, and my delight in the impossibly clever and vain James. Other characters are likable in what amounts to a series of short stories held together by narrative from James' temporary roommate.

Adventures in town and country, on the set and in a temple as James tries on roles and his human friends try to keep up.

  • I admit to making it only halfway through this book. At which point I had to weigh whether I wanted to waste more (yawn) time on a repetitive narration of a cat exceeding the boundaries of haughtiness. The answer was no. I have other books by authors who actually know how to create a plot that intrigues. I shall go there now.

  • What a pleasant, humorous story. I like talking animal stories, but this isn’t one of them and it works better here. So no the cat doesn’t talk. Although I will say the people who interpret his looks/communication are quite gifted. This is a refreshingly nice story.

  • Oddly delightful, with no particular plot but rather an engaging narrative of friendship, outings , fine dining and assorted small pleasures

  • My husband and I both really enjoyed this book. James is a delightful new cat character, and his surrounding people are both interesting and at times quite amusing. James himself is a charmer, and we especially enjoyed his gourmet/gourmand taste in food and drink (Scotch being a favorite). This is not the usual "cute cat" book; it's more a novel in which a cat plays the key role.
