Vinyl Cafe' host Stuart McLean dead at 68 TORONTO - Stuart McLean, the bestselling author and soft-spoken humorist whose gentle celebration of life's biggest and smallest moments endeared him to legions of faithful listeners of CBC Radio's "The Vinyl Cafe," has died. He was a professor emeritus at Ryerson University in Toronto and former director of the broadcast division of the School of Journalism.

Also by Stuart McLean. The picture on the cover had drawn him to the book-a woman striding across a front lawn with a wreath of chili peppers tucked under her arm. Vinyl Cafe Unplugged. She looked like she was in a hurry, and that made him think of Gerta, so he bought the book-never imagining that it was something his wife had been waiting for all her life. Carl had been as surprised as anyone last May when Gerta began the neighborhood Christmas group. Although not, perhaps, as surprised as Dave was when his wife, Morley, joined it.

The world can be a perilous place. And the seemingly friendly world of Canada’s favourite fictional family is no different. Everyone is afraid of something: Dave, for example, is afraid of dolls, germs and Mary Turlington. Sam, on the other hand, is afraid of bees, UFOs, and “mewpilated” cows. Morley’s fears—public nudity and drop-in visits—are slightly less peculiar. It’s hard to be brave in the face of sewer monsters, deformed fish heads, abandoned car wrecks and ravenous bears, but in this brand new collection of Vinyl Cafe stories, Dave and the gang pluck up the courage to deal with all kinds of danger, both real and imagined.

In Stuart McLean’s hilarious new book of cautionary tales, rediscover the deep, delicious thrill of fear that looms so large in childhood and spills over into adult life to startling, often delightful effect.

  • A get collection which I passed on to a friend who was also delighted by it

  • I have read all of Stuart McLean's books, listened to his Vinyl Cafe broadcasts on CBC Radio 2, and also attended many of his live shows. His writing is brilliant to the point where you are not reading words, but actually seeing the story in your mind. Stuart is a wonderful storyteller and his a gift of the language.

  • Good read.

  • Mr.McLean continues to release laugh out loud tales of the hapless Dave and his family. A must have for those of use who love hearing about Dave's adventures, whether present day of from his past in Nova Scotia.

  • Gift and folks loved it!

  • ....because I love anything by Stuart McLean. While it seems a shorter book than his others it's still packed with humour.
