  • I am a fan of John Yount's writing, but this book failed to hold my attention.

John Yount is one of those authors who is able to take simple ordinary words and paint a beautiful powerful authentic picture that stays with you. These characters really touch your heart; you feel connected to their awkwardness, pain, simple joys, anger, struggles...these poor, mostly uneducated people jump out of the pages with their profoundness and uniqueness. Yount proves less is more in writing, once again putting everyday situations onto the page forming them into a spellbinding story, a moving experience, blending tragedy with humor.
His simple but eccentric characters, earthy settings, and hard-life written with humor feels similar to the great Erskine Caldwell's and Larry Mcmurtry's, among others.
The author with seemingly no effort transports you right smack into the lives of his characters in small town Georgia in the late 50's.
Protagonist and narrator Beau Jim has just served 6 yrs in the navy and has returned home. Feeling lost he decides going to school on the GI bill is preferable to working. Moving in with his older brother Dan who is struggling to scratch a living from a barren farm, Dan's wife Charlene, bitter about having to leave town to live in "this hell hole", and 6 yr old Sheila, unfortunate to have the monster Charlene as a mother.
Beau Jim finds companionship with an old buddy, Claire, hard drinker and wanna-be pool hustler, and then hooks up with Yancy, a female he slightly knew from high school, the only one left in town that hadn't married.
The story culminates in high tension, and is in every way a page turner all the way through.
If you are lucky enough to find this author's books I highly recommend you settle yourself down for some good reading.
