African Writers Series (AWS) is a series of books by African writers that has been published by Heinemann since 1962. The series has ensured an international voice to major African writers-including Chinua Achebe, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o, Steve Biko, Ama Ata Aidoo, Nadine Gordimer, Buchi Emecheta, and Okot p'Bitek. Achebe focused first on West African writers, but soon the series branched out, publishing the works of Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o in East Africa, and Nadine Gordimer in South Africa.

For books on African culture, your resort is African novels by African writers NOT novels based on Africa by foreigners

For books on African culture, your resort is African novels by African writers NOT novels based on Africa by foreigners. Novels by Chimmanda Adichie, Chinua, Wa Thiogo, Yaa Gyasi, Armah etc. Now pertaining to history, I plead on you to seek out books written by Africans not Europeans/Americans, remember the old saying that goes history is written only by the winners ? Books that I would highly encourage you to look into are quite simply history books by respective African nations on their own histories.

African American literature, body of literature written by Americans of African descent. Beginning in the pre-Revolutionary War period, African American writers have engaged in a creative, if often contentious, dialogue with American letters. The result is a literature rich in expressive subtlety. In the early 19th century, the standard-bearers of African American literature spoke with heightening urgency of the need for whites to address the terrible sin of slavery.

Names such as John Nagenda, James Ngugi and David Rubadiri make some of their earliest appearances in this anthology of stories, plays and poems by people who have studied at Makerere. This is a volume worth reading in its own right, but will also attract those who find African writing especially interesting and significant.
