The Scream of a Dove book. His first book as Robert Charles was 'The Faceless Fugitive' (1963) and up to 2010 he had written 33 novels as such with Blood and Sangria (2010) being the last one. As Charles Leader he first published 'Fron Librarian Note: There is more than one author by this name in the Goodreads database. Robert Charles is a pseudonymn of Robert Charles Smith. He also writes under the pseudonymn 'Charles Leader'.

Robert Charles (1865–1900) was an African American living in New Orleans who committed the spree killing of 4 police and 2 civilians, and wounding of over 20 others and sparked a major race riot in 1900; known as the Robert Charles riots. On Monday, July 23, 1900, Charles sat on the front steps of a house in New Orleans talking with a friend, while waiting to rendezvous with his girlfriend, Virginia Banks, who lived on the block.

Robert Charles Wilson’s fine first novel is a sweet and subtle probing into the question of what it means to be human. There’s a resonance in this book, an illumination of depths. I greatly enjoyed A HIDDEN PLACE. I found it touching and powerful, and I very much look forward to Mr. Wilson’s next book. He’s a talent to watch.
