A pantechnicon van, usually shortened to pantec, was originally a furniture removal van drawn by horses and used by the British company "The Pantechnicon" for delivering and collecting furniture which its customers wished to store. The name is a word largely of British English usage. The word "Pantechnicon" is an invented one, formed from the Greek pan ("all") and techne ("art"). It was originally the name of a large establishment in Motcomb Street, Belgravia, London, opened around 1830.
A pantechnicon as the author points out (in fact he's one of those compulsive explainers) is not only a van and its syllabic breakdown offers three other possibilities developed here (pan erotic frenzy; technique; and icon image). He's a painter, an experimentalist, but not the first to prove that that much older theory of the transposition of art doesn't necessarily work out. The single piece of action here, based on a story by the Russian writer Andreyev, entails the rape of a girl by three itinerant convicts in the van and in the presence of her lover.
The artist and writer Lionel Miskin, who has died aged 81, appeared at St Martins in 1943 dressed in Air Force uniform, a red scarf slung nonchalantly round his neck, bringing glamour into a wartime art school. He was the gentlest, funniest, most interesting person we had ever met. He would breeze into class, draw a brilliant portrait or two and regale us with tales of "Lionel's war", which included visits to a neutral Dublin where he claimed the restaurants were full of German officers.
