Robert Frost - 1874-1963. When a friend calls to me from the road And slows his horse to a meaning walk, I don’t stand still and look around On all the hills I haven’t hoed, And shout from where I am, What is it? No, not as there is a time to talk. I thrust my hoe in the mellow ground, Blade-end up and five feet tall, And plod: I go up to the stone wall For a friendly visit. One of the most celebrated figures in American poetry, Robert Frost was the author of numerous poetry collections, including including New Hampshire (Henry Holt and Company, 1923). Born in San Francisco in 1874, he lived and taught for many years in Massachusetts and Vermont. He died in Boston in 1963.

Frost’s poem is quite short, this means that there are no extraneous details to distract a reader from his main theme: friendship. It becomes clear as the poem progresses that Frost’s interest in writing ‘A Time to Talk’ was in speaking on the value of friendship and the place it should take within one’s life. Nothing is more important to his speaker than the waiting companion

He was in his late 30s when he moved to England, where he issued his first book and found an appreciation for his work he had not found in America

He was in his late 30s when he moved to England, where he issued his first book and found an appreciation for his work he had not found in America. At the outbreak of World War I, Frost went back to farming in New Hampshire.
