In 1989, Philip Gross published a book called Manifold Manor, which for my money is one of the best and most enjoyable poetry collections of the past 20 years. The manor of the title is a haunted house of remarkable originality and spookiness, populated by characters, both real and spectral, who live long in the memory. Since those days, Gross has also written novels and his latest features another big house in the country which is much more than it seems at first
