I has assumed that we would be presented with poems seen on the Underground

I has assumed that we would be presented with poems seen on the Underground. As I bought the book as a present I have had only a cursory glance at the contents and have the impression they are selected for reading on the Underground.

Gerard Benson, Judith Chernaik. Here’s the shortest poem in the book, and I imagine I’d enjoy reading it on my morning commute: Dreams. This book is not yet featured on Listopia. Here we are all, by day; by night we’re hurled By dreams, each one, into a several world.

Judith Chernaik, Cicely Herbert, Imtiaz Dharker, and George . Partners for Poems on the Underground, include London Underground, which.

Judith Chernaik, Cicely Herbert, Imtiaz Dharker, and George Szertes now select poems for inclusion in the programme. But the book - which is still very much in print 27 years later and must rank as one of the best-selling poetry books of all time - immediately sold out and went straight to reprint prior to publication. Partners for Poems on the Underground, include London Underground, which generously supports the programme, and the Arts Council of England, the British Council, London Arts and the Poetry Society.

Poems on the Underground. What’s great is the choice of poems: a mix of the classics, William Blake and Dante, with many modern poems. It also brings in the art of the typographer. That combination of visual art and poetry works wonderfully well.

Narrated by: Gerard Benson, Cicely Herbert. The poems soon caught the public's imagination. Here on the trains there was at last something different, words to soothe, inspire, move, charm, surprise, arouse, even occasionally to shock, but never to sell. Categories: Drama & Poetry, Poetry. The programme grew, and attracted international attention, so that now there are similar programmes of public poetry on transport systems around the world, from New York to Shanghai, including Dublin, Paris, Athens, Stuttgart, St. Petersburg, Moscow, San Francisco, and Barcelona. by. Summary: The now familiar poem posters first appeared in London's tube and underground trains in 1986. The idea was simple enough: why not convert the empty advertising space above the passenger's heads into a simple celebration of the poetry that has underscored English literature for a thousand years or more? The poems soon caught the public's imagination. Many appear in a new collection of Poems on the Underground to be published by Penguin Books later this year. Published by Poems on the Underground Registered at Companies House in England and Wales No. 06844606 as Underground Poems Community Interest Company. FOREWORD The poets in our collection of World Poems were born in forty-four different countries, spanning the continents.

  • I thought this book would be written by and about experiences commuting on The Tube!!! It's not! It is a collection of classic poetry written by pretty famous poets like Keats, Wordsworth, etc. I was hoping for something a little more urban and gritty. Oh well, I love the classics, too. But I own several anthologies already.

  • wonderful collection

  • This was given to me when it was first published. It remains my favourite anthology of poetry ever. I would happily recommend it to anyone who is interested in a broad survey of English poetry. My fave is "English Teeth" by Spike Milligan.
