For, in parallel with the six books of his poetry for adult readers, Reeves composed a succession of collections of verses for young children, intended, as often as not, to be spoken or even chanted as well as merely read. No, Poetry Notebook would be the right title. A few years later I fell ill myself; but I had already published, in Poetry, a few chapters of my Poetry Notebook that treated time as if it were running short. Stylistically, thematically, and linguistically, these poems are at once familiar and numinous. They are protean forms in the mind and heart, forming shifting, evocative images and scenes.

Discover his five favourite poetry books in this essay, taken from the book. Here he chooses the poetry books that continue to inspire him, extracted from Clive James's Poetry Notebook, a treasure trove of essays and musings on his most-loved ar. .W. B.
