He entered Christ's College, Cambridge, in 1631, was elected to a fellowship in 1639, and remained there the rest of his life.

This work was written at the time that More was falling under the spell of Descartes' mechanical philosophy (a term More himself coined). In the 'Notes on Psychathanasia' we find him agreeing with Descartes against Digby on the theory of light and with Descartes' vortex theory of the tides. More was soon to start a correspondence with Descartes but eventually gave up mechanism.
