Translated by DONALD D. WALSH. In it he writes simply, directly, forcefully, earthily of his love for and his lover’s quarrels with Matilde Urrutia, whom he married in 1955. Perhaps because of the autobiographical nature of the poems, Neruda published them anonymously in 1952.

New Directions celebrates the Pablo Neruda Centennial. In celebration of the 100th anniversary of Pablo Neruda's birth, New Directions is pleased to announce the reissue of a classic work in a timeless translation by Donald D. Walsh and fully bilingual. The Captain's Verses was first published anonymously in 1952, some years before Neruda married Matilde Urrutia - the one with "the fire, of an unchained meteor" - to whom he had addressed these poems of love, ecstasy, devotion, and fury

This translation of The Captain's Verses is a major achievement in the genre of love poetry. Neruda originally published the book anonymously, some years before he married Matilde Urrutia, to whom he had addressed these poems of passionate devotion as well as love's quarrels. In this collection, the Chilean poet's brilliant images are expressed with remarkable directness and simplicity. And Donald D. Walsh's translations, with the Spanish en face, succeed in giving a sense of that simple, lucid strength.

Pablo Neruda, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, finished writing The Captain's Verses in 1952 while in exile on the island of Capri the paradisal setting for the blockbuster film Il Postino (The Postman). Surrounded by sea, sun, and Capri's natural splendors, Neruda addressed these poems to his lover Matilde Urrutia before they were married, but didn't publish them publicly until 1963.

The verses were written for Matilde Urrutia, a Chilean singer with whom he had an extensive affair with and would later marry (1952-‘53). It’s assumed that he took a while to publish The Captain’s Verses to protect the feeling’s of his former wife, Delia De Carril.

  • These are tender, evocative, lush poems that would be any woman's saving grace if they were written about her. Every word, carefully chosen, become beacons and messages to those who value eros, as well as agape. What a world of beauty, passion, sensuality, and reverence comes shining through these poems that dance with an inner light, long after the reading is done.

I was captivated and engaged, hanging onto every word as if they were silvery moons dangled in front of me across the black carpet of night sky in that siren's call that love's quest has not passed away from those who honor and acknowledge it.

My mind ate up these poems like summer peaches and digested them into my soul. What a different tear arises from the realization of the poet's deep understanding and care for love's fragile existence.

Proof that you cannot create art without science, electrons carried me here and carried me away into the splendor of this poetry. The poems' words spread out in my mind like validation that love is the one true thing. I feel a kindred spirit with those who read and appreciated these heartfelt and meaningful poems.

Every accolade is deserved for this remarkable collection of love poetry. Five stars are not enough to say thank you for translating these touching poems into English. I was greatly moved in a way that gives me hope for the world. -- Eve Paludan, romance author

  • In my studied opinion, this is probably Neruda's best book, i.e., collection. The Spanish is included with the English, the translation is excellent, the print and lay-out are clear. These poems have both delicacy and power. They will bestir, becalm, and sometimes sanctify.

  • I chatted once with a Latin American President whose favorite poet was Neruda. I told him that I read Los Versos del Capitan to my girlfriends.

"Ay, si!" he chuckled. "Para enamorarlas."

Nothing seals the deal like Neruda in bed.

  • I think the translation could be better (in my non professional opinion) with the few poems I've read so far. Overall I am pleased with this edition and these poems. I like practicing my Spanish with them.

  • I bought this as a gift for a fellow poet lover and Spanish speaker.

  • I have been in possession of a paperback version of this book for some time now and could NOT resist reacquiring it in digital version. Neruda's poignant, almost pastoral sense of romanticism is captured beautifully in this publication. I recommend this purchase to anyone who enjoys Neruda's work.

  • Love it.
