Ms. O’Hara moved to California after her first marriage where she became a screenwriter during the silent film era through the advent of talking movies.

Ms. In 1930, during her second marriage, Ms O’Hara moved to a ranch in Wyoming where she wrote her three novels, the classic My Friend Flicka, and the sequels Thunderhead and Green Grass of Wyoming, about the McLaughlin family and the younger son and his horse, Flicka.

I had not known before 2012 of Mary O'Hara's interest and great talent in composing and playing music. This play should be read with O'Hara's Story of a Musical in which she guides the reader through the process of inventing, writing, scoring, and producing a musical. In the book she describes the music and scenes far better than most of us can imagine them just reading the script. If you grew up adoring O'Hara's Wyoming books, this pair of items are Must-Reads.

Mary O’Hara’s 1922 marriage to Helge Sture-Vasa, proved pivotal to the direction of her life. In 1930, she and her husband bought a ranch in Laramie County, Wyoming. Originally, they planned to raise sheep, but that business was decimated by Depression. She composed a musical, The Catch Colt, first performed in 1961 and formally published in 1964. Mary O’Hara continued to write compositions for the piano, and to gather her memories for two autobiographies. She died at the age of 95 in Chevy Chase, Maryland, on October 14, 1980.

HARDBACK
  • A nice little story in itself, my main interest was in seeing Mary O'Hara's novelization of her musical. Previous to 2012, I had read the three Flicka based books several years ago. I discovered her autobiographical works and the pot boiler Son of Adam Wyngate, all of which are quite philosophical at times and all of which I enjoyed and purchased.

This novella is a nice story, shorter and less developed than the longer novels she wrote. I had not known before 2012 of Mary O'Hara's interest and great talent in composing and playing music. How wonderful it would be for a you tube video to appear of someone performing her musical "The Catch Colt"!

  • Catch Colt, [defined as a product of an unplanned union] is a story of human relationships in a time and place where values are different from today. People, however have not changed, so we can easily relate. It is the book version of a musical, so it unfolds in that format. A comforting, quick read.
