Secret Desires of a Gentleman book. Laura Lee Guhrke has been on my must read list for some while, and this book is a good illustration of why she is there. Maria Martingale is about to realize her dream of owning a French pastry shop in London due to the financial backing of her friend, Prudence, who received a large inheritance and married a duke.

Forcestalker

I enjoyed this installment in the Girl-Bachelor series, but have noticed upon a second reading how really incredibly mean and awful the hero, Phillip, is to heroine Maria. Coupled with a somewhat rushed resolution, I found this to be the weakest book of the series so far. If you like the rest of the series, you'll like this book... just maybe not as much.

Maria is an ambitious, headstrong, capable and lovely woman nearing thirty who is finally opening her own patisserie. I love her as a dedicated business owner and savant baker, and I love that (unlike many romance novel heroines), she seems to be aware that she's a pretty girl and is not afraid to use that at times. However, neither does she wield her beauty as a shield or defense, which is refreshing. Maria is worth reading about, and her motivations and actions are consistent and believable. Seeing her interact with her friends Prudence St. Cyres and Emma Marlowe (from the previous books "The Wicked Ways of a Duke" and "And Then He Kissed Her") is also lovely, though you don't need to have read those books to understand this one.

Phillip is a viscount entirely preoccupied with society. Guhrke tries to make his snobbery altruistic, with him at one point explaining that he prevented his younger brother from eloping with Maria twelve years earlier to save Lawrence (the brother) from the pain of social pariahship. However. Phillip takes his sweet time sharing this revelation, and also reveals before and after this point his lack of faith in the character of either Lawrence or Maria to have held up against the censure of society. He is inconsistent in his actions towards Maria, despite thoroughly believing himself to be a gentleman and acting in Lawrence's best interest. It becomes clear that the reason he thinks Lawrence would find her endlessly irresistible is because, duh-doy, Phillip finds Maria endlessly fascinating, but resists her through callous and abrupt dialogue (and insulting actions like paying her not to follow through on said elopement). My sympathy for Phillip was low, and I didn't find his ultimate about-face terribly satisfying (and, spoiler alert, he made his lovey-dovey declaration in a very public setting, which I personally hate in both fiction and reality). In fact, I felt that Maria deserved better. But Guhrke didn't write any alternate suitors for Maria, so I guess she (and we) are stuck with him.

The hero of the story won me over when he kept that ribbon for so long. It was so very, very moving. It makes me get a lump in my throat and makes me want to cry that it meant so much to him to keep this delicate tiny part of her with him always. Just...wow! It was really beautiful and she never knew it. That is love. :)

This book was a quick and easy read. However, I agree with many of the other reviewers that the ending left a lot to be desired. There was just too much said in that public declaration. It seemed incredulous and too impulsive for Phillip. Consequently, it did not seem genuine.

Also, throughout the story I would have preferred to see a little more affection between Maria and Phillip. And she was a pastry chef for goodness sakes. That leaves a world of sweets from which to contrive some very romantic moments, but there were none, save the bit of sweet on her mouth in one scene. And if there was so much focus on the dang food, certainly it should have been tied in more to make the story a little more seductive. As it was, it was all just way too predictable.

Finally, I think she should have known about her feelings for him for all those years and not have suddenly discovered that they were for him and not his brother. She would have known it but known that Lawrence was her second choice, right? And I guess I was just never really convinced that she actually had always loved him.

It was an entertaining read for me, but not very memorable.

IGOT

I absolutely love this book. It has some of the most romantic scenes I've ever read. One can't help to love Philip as he battles with his upbringing and his incovenient feelings for a woman he deems unsuitable, but who is in fact just right.

This one was my favorite...the teasing game is mind blowing...worth reading ????...Chemistry between Hero and heroine is amazing...but It would have been better if she would have find about the ribbon herself

Sabrina meets Pride and Prejudice.

My only complaint is about Maria's abrupt decision at the end to give up her bakery, which seemed to come out of nowhere and be totally unnecessary.

This is the third in the series and I am happy I read it. It dragged a tiny bit, but I was vested in the characters so I was glad I read the book.

This is the second time I have read this book and I must say it always gives me a very goodd feeling. Phillip and M aria two very strong individual from different backgrounds, yet was able to fall in love. This book is simply beautiful
