Dan Marcou retired after 33 years as a highly decorated police officer in 2006. In 2007 his first novel The Calling, The Making of a Veteran Cop, was published. It is still being used in police academies and criminal justice programs as an exciting and accurate portrayal of law enforcement. He followed this novel with SWAT: Blue Knights and Black Armor, and Nobodys Heroes, to complete the well-received McCarthy-Compton Trilogy.

  • Really gives an insight to the life of a police officer and the highs and lows they go through on a daily basis (without the current day hate on law enforcement to add to their negative experiences) without being logical and boring. It was a book I really enjoyed and will perhaps read again one day because it is comically and well-written along with realistic. I highly recommend to anyone, but especially to people in the criminal justice field (or college major).

  • I'll keep this simple. If you can't go for a ride-a-long with several different police officers to experience first hand what it is like to be a rookie cop trying to learn the ropes and gain experience, reading "The Calling..." will get you as close and you can get without the worry of getting yelled at, spit on, or shot at. I made the mistake of starting to read it at bedtime. Don't make the same mistake unless you can function adequately on less than two hours of sleep. I enjoyed every page. Now I have a better insight into the internal conflict these men and women have separating the horrors of police work from personal and home life. I also understand why this book is required reading for some Criminal Justice degree programs. Whether for personal enrichment or education pursuant to a career in law enforcement you will find this book enjoyable at the least, and perhaps quite valuable.

  • A cop and a great author. I have just bought the heroes book 4 days after I bought this one. I don't usually read a book in 4 days. There isn't that much time in my schedule.

  • I've been a cop for just about 20 years. Reading this book made me remember just why I became one and made my "burnt outness" go away. Now I look forward to going to work again, just like I did when I first started. I hope Lt. Marcou writes some more books, I even give copies of all his books to the new officers I am field training! Kinda like a "self help" book without the title!

  • Give this to a rookie.

  • Great book. Hubs loves it.

  • Excellent book! Dan Mccarthy, Sgt. Compton are great. Well written book-hard to stop reading!

  • This book is for ever officer who has ever worked a beat, roasted on a hot day in a black and white, or rode the "shoe leather express" during a summer festival. An excellent book for every officer no matter the hours or years you have on the street.
