In 1981, sixteen year old Charlotte Denzel quietly takes a chair from the kitchen into her upstairs bedroom with none of her family noticing. On her tippy toes, Charlotte stands on the chair while knotting a school tie around the ceiling light fitting and another around her neck. While Charlotte's younger brother Graham and her parents eat, her older sister Jennifer goes to get her to join them. Jennifer cuts them saving her sibling's life but thinking how to explain the waste of ties to their parents. Later Charlotte denies this happened while Jennifer insists it occurred.

In 1924, the sisters' grandmother Bertha is planning to meet Mr. Ronnie Booth in Hyde Park, but someone told her angry father. She thinks it must be her friend Elsie as her sister Jemima did not know of her rendezvous and Ronnie would not have told anyone. Jemima calms their dad by agreeing to chaperone Bertha. In 1926, Jemima gives birth to Ronnie's baby while raging Bertha seethes over her sibling's betrayal.

In 1945 Caroline goes to visit her boyfriend Clive, but her sister Deirdre tells their mom who follows her. When her mom is trapped in Nazi-bombed rubble, Caroline realizes her dad wants his wife to die.

Focusing primarily on sisterly relationships between three generations from the same family, this brilliant drama comes across as an interrelated thought-provoking tri-story saga. The powerful premise is based on relativity re how each interprets the critical personal events that cleverly keeps the readers shifting who we emphasize with as new interpretation of the facts and lies constantly surface.

    Harriet Klausner

  • Essentially, this is a story of three pairs of sisters across three generations of an English family. None of the sisters' relationships is very positive, but all are different. This is essential to the plot, although a sad (and unrepresentative) portrayal of what sisters can mean to each other.

The chapters move between the stories of each generation, and the family history, and skeletons, are revealed as we progress. This is one of the most enjoyable aspects of the book. We think we understand what's going on, and gradually find out that pretty much nothing as what we first assumed or expected. It's skilfully done and kept me motivated to read more. In fact I enjoyed it so much that I read the whole book over the course of a day, even though it was one I would not have chosen for myself, based on the plot teasers on the back cover (it was a gift).

Each chapter also has a different viewpoint character, usually one of the sisters, leading to a healthy dose of dramatic irony--only the reader can put together the whole story as none of the characters knows all of the secrets. And this is a rather delicious element. In the hands of an unskilled author, multiple viewpoints can be a detraction, but in this case it's very nicely handled.

The historical aspects are well researched (as far as I can tell as a non-Brit). Certainly the author brings to life each historical period with enough detail to make it realistic without the descriptions being cumbersome.

After reading The Past and Other Lies, I will look up more of Joel's books, particularly for the writing style, the nicely pieced plotting, and the characterisations.

    *** Spoiler Alert -- potential triggers ***
The attempted suicide is described in some detail.
If you are wanting to avoid stories with sexual abuse and similar themes, be assured there is none in this story.

  • Well-written but find the snark in the more contemporary sections of the story to be disturbing rather than clever.

  • This was a well written novel that kept my interest until the end. I really enjoyed the "mysteries" and the clever way things didn't turn out as you expected. It also had a bit of low key humor in it, reminiscent of Kate Atikinson, but perhaps not as morbid as she sometimes can be. I couldn't help thinking it might have been a "great" read if there was just a little more explanation and fleshing out of some of the stories. It may be because of my middle age brain, but I had to go back and try to find certain key information that was given out earlier in the book that was pertinent later. I could tell she was trying to be subtle and not "spell everything out" for the reader ( which I appreciate), but perhaps just a bit more to the narratives ( especially regarding the grandmother and mother & their respective sisters, the modern day girls tale was just fine) would have made it a 5 star for me.

  • Maggie Joel has the ability to draw the reader in with her believable plot that makes you want to keep reading to find out 'what's it all about'. Her ability to draw a landscape with words without being gushy or just using words to take up space, that evokes chords within. An excellent read. Have also read her new book, 'The Second Last Woman in England'. Loved that too. Read it in 3 days. I'll be watching earnestly for her next offering.
