To fully appreciate the Little World of Don Camillo you have to realize that we are talking about postwar Italy . I hadn't seen the Don Camillo books in 35 years, but remembered them from childhood.

To fully appreciate the Little World of Don Camillo you have to realize that we are talking about postwar Italy, where the Christian Democrats and the Communists hated each other; you also have to realize that Don Camillo and Peppone are from the same small town, went to the same school, and fought a common foe during World War I. Now, much older and with greater understanding, I can appreciate the stories at a whole new level.

Translated by Una Vincenzo Troubridge. First published in Great Britain by Gollancz 1951. Published in Penguin Books 1962. Many people have written long articles on The Little World of Don Camillo and many people have written me letters about this or that story, and so now I am a little confused, and I would find myself rather embarrassed if I had to make any judgement of The Little World of Don Camillo.

Little World of Don Camillo (Italian: Don Camillo; French: Le Petit Monde de don Camillo) is a 1952 Italian-French film directed by Julien Duvivier, starring Fernandel and Gino Cervi. It was the first film in the "Don Camillo" series, which made Fernandel an international star. The film was based on the novel Don Camillo by Italian author Giovannino Guareschi. It was followed in 1953 by The Return of Don Camillo, also directed by Duvivier.

Disaster threatens when a mild-mannered Italian priest wages a personal war against the village communists
  • This beloved series of short stories is more interesting now than when I first read it 40+ years ago. The author has a great talent for making his characters come alive. The faith of Don Camillo, his humanity, and his willingness to seak pardon show the strength of the priesthood. Although written in the immediate post WWII period they seem to anticipate the life of good Pope John XXIII who only became widely known upon his election to the papacy. Don Camillo is the story that might have been the life of Angelo Roncalli if he remained in his small diocese instead of entering the Vatican diplomatic service. The bond between Camillo, his adversary Pepone, and the townspeople is the story of love. I encourage all to read this and the other Don Camillo books. Some are still availible in public libraries. They are wonderful, hopeful reading.

  • This humorous collection of stories from a simple Italian priest in post-WWII Italy is a hoot. Captures the push pull of having to tend to even those "Communists" in the flock who make up the colorful landscape of parish life. And Don Camillo, contrary to the stereotype of the saintly, displays that approachable humor that comprises the relationship one often has in a deep relationship with one's Creator. Funny!

  • I first read excerpts from this book in Readers Digest Collections in 1959.
Then our school library purchased more of Giovonni's books thru the 60's
The writing is so strong and true to human nature and pointedly at Italians who I love. The subtle humor can really be appreciated. I am an honorary Italian adopted by "Ma" who I love so much. The book shows how we as humans can be angels and devils, but all so human. As the old man said during WWII when asked about the Jews, "E tutti cristiani!" He said christian but is meaning all the same.
I love this whole series, when I can find them and afford them!
I would also recommend--Comrade Don Camillo. Or any of his books!

  • This is a wonderful book.It can be read any number of times. Still it does not lose its innate humour and charm. As a political satire it is even better than any of George Orwell's books.A book for all times and for all ages. Human foibles and weaknesses and Divine Virtues are abundantly portrayed in this book.It makes fun of the Catholic Church as well as the Communists.A truly inspiring work. I am only sorry that I do not know Italian.Since to read it in the original language would give the greatest pleasure. If anyone is not satisfied after reading it.Tell me .I will buy it from you. I have given this book away to many of my friends and foes alike.
    yours sincerely ,

There are forces that divide them, and also forces that unite them. It is a wonderful book, because it describes the Italian national character and universal human nature.

  • I first read this book in high school, and have never forgotten the tale. Guareschi has a simple narrative voice, but a knack for plot and a magical touch for characters. The book was even better than I remember it being in high school. Of course, if you are a communist, you might not like it so well, but as a convert to Catholicism, I was not only thoroughly delighted, but deeply touched. For more of his humor, I can also recommend Home Sweet Home.
