  • I followed the illustrator Chris Giarrusso from his G-Man and Mini Marvels series, which my son loved, to the Nate Banks series, of which Red Alert is the third installment.

Jake Bell and Chris Giarrusso have created a series that is just right for the pre-teen boy. To my dismay, my son declared to me the other day that "Reading is for old people." Yet he makes an exception for this series -- in fact, he ranks this series so high on his list of favorites that in his opinion it rivals Jeff Kinney's Wimpy Kid series.

The books are a clever blend of narrative and comic book -- each book contains a mini-comic book as well as the story itself. My son likes the setting for the series -- sixth-grader Nate Banks's school, where his history teacher just happens to be a superhero.

The plot for Red Alert, as for the other books, is fast-moving and peopled with characters having old-school comic-book names, like Doctor Nocturne, Captain Zombie and the Red Menace. Situations straight from middle school add humor, such as this declaration at the beginning of Red Alert: "As I hung against the wall, a startling realization came to me. I was going to die if I couldn't do a chin-up." Talk about timeless gym class terrors!

All in all, this is a great series for reluctant readers who need to have a high interest in a book's subject matter before picking it up and for whom comic books can act as an entry into more sustained narrative reading.

  • great read for kids!
