President Adams' Alligator was a fantastic blend of educational content mixed with vibrant illustrations and kid-friendly storytelling. The illustrations in this book were great and will really get kids thinking about what it would have been like to live back before there were all kinds of technology to make our lives easier. The kids love the imagery presented in the book, especially the idea of Washington brushing his horses' teeth and Jefferson sharing food with his mockingbird.

The text is laid out in monotonous blocks over thinly colored scenes that pose awkwardly rendered figures against White House floors or green lawns. In evident recognition that the presidents might be hard to tell apart, on some (but not enough) pages they carry identifying banners.

  • Good.

  • My grandson loves alligators, crocodiles.
The president had one, very fun book. He's
    6.

  • I would not recommend it, period!! I have not recommended it to anyone and do not intend to do so!

  • What a delightful time we, my 5 and 7 year old Grandsons, had reading this. We snuggled down in a large chair together holding this beautifully illustrated book.
The facts they learned in this book are some of the things that will linger with them for a life time. In the end the 7 year old wanted a dog, but of course the little one thought that an alligator would make a great pet. Yeah right!
Not only did they learn about the different pets the Presidents had, but they were able to learn a bit about the different Presidents. They both knew who the first President was, but now we have added to their knowledge.
As we finished the page the hunt was on for the hidden alligator, what fun, and it wasn't always the oldest that found it. They also learned about cows, and horses living at the House, they were surprised, but soon realized that there were no cars back in the early days.
What a great learning lesson for them. We will be rereading this again and again. This book is a keeper for them!

I received this book from Regnery Publishing, Inc., and was not required to give a positive review.

  • The illustrations in this book were great and will really get kids thinking about what it would have been like to live back before there were all kinds of technology to make our lives easier. The kids love the imagery presented in the book, especially the idea of Washington brushing his horses' teeth and Jefferson sharing food with his mockingbird. This story was a great choice because it was serious enough to teach, but not so serious that it couldn't be fun at the same time.

  • One of the things that's great about President Adams' Alligator is the way that it takes people who lived in a very different time period and who had a very different social status than the book's audience, and makes them relatable by focusing on the types of pets that they had. A lot of the time, it's hard to get kids excited about learning, but this book does a great job at making sure that they're reading something worthwhile that's still accessible.

  • I think that the best part of this book for kids is the interactive activity pages that they can complete after reading the story. The book itself takes on the feel of a combination story/activity book that kids will enjoy filling out after reading what's essentially a creatively-written history lesson. Overall, this book does a great job of capturing kids' attention and giving them a story to read that will keep them excited for multiple times.

  • This a great tool for helping kids learn about history. It helps connect kids with the presidents by talking about pets, a common ground that kids are frequently familiar with. It will keep them interested and excited about learning if they can draw the parallels between themselves and the former leaders of our country. Definitely a great book for the early reader!
