Andy Stanton studied English at Oxford but they kicked him out. Before becoming a children's writer he was a film .

He lives in Leicester with his wife and three sons.

In this book Mr Gum exploits a dancing bear. Polly saves the bear and meets some very funny characters on the way. Mr Gum and his sidekick are punished by being made to dance for the pirates. This is a very funny and enjoyable book. I think it is suitable for ks2 and would be a good book to encourage a reluctant reader.

book and lyrics by Andy Stanton music by Jim Fortune. 25 July to 31 August 2019 Running Time: Approx two hours inc. interval. Based on the hilariously anarchic, award-winning children’s books, Mr Gum and the Dancing Bear – the Musical! promises to be an all-singing, all-dancing, extravaganza for children and adults alike. Author Andy Stanton creates the book and lyrics, with music by Jim Fortune (Pericles). Full of outlandish characters and joyful, utterly idiotic songs, this production is definitely not your average family fare.

The fifth Mr Gum story is shamelessly hilarious

Good evening. Do you like bears called Padlock? Course you do. Do you like hot-air balloons? Course you do. Do you like tall sailing ships with mad sea captains, and horrifying old villains and words like "wab!," "tungler," and "kelp?" COURSE you do! Well, guess what, you lucky little nibbleheads? This book's got all of those things and a lot more besides. It's a rollicker! It's a frolicker! It's a funtime sun-time yollicker! So what you waiting for? GET READING!

  • My 9 year old son loves these books. We bought every one. He enjoys the humor and the pictures make him feel as if the book isn't overwhelming.

  • This book is hilarious for kids and parents alike. I look forward to getting a new Mr Gum book almost as much as my seven year old son does.

  • Just for a change of pace, this one has more or less of a plot. But don't let that discourage you.

It's still a rollicker and a frolicker, you little nibbleheads. Polly and Friday and Alan Taylor and Jake the Dog are always saving the Town of Lamonic Bibber from evil Mr. Gum and Billy William the Third. Shabba me whiskers, but this is exciting stuff.

It's silly, but not dumb. It's inventive, but not obscure. It's shrewd, but not condescending. It's dry, but not with that odd Dahl aftertaste. And for my little ones, it has been engaging, amusing, and very popular. They can be avant-garde before they're kindergarde.

So, if you've been waiting for post-modern to reach pre-school, here it is.

  • My son started book #1 at age 5 and is hooked! Absurdist humor that always cracks us up. "Shabba me whiskers" out of the mouth of a five year old is a gift!
We love this author and his favorite tv show 'Bag of Sticks'.
