Tops & Bottoms (Caldecott Honor Book). When I first picked up the charming, "Tops and Bottoms" picture book by Janet Stevens, I was initially certain that this was a kind of Brer Rabbit tale. It had all the markings of it. Animals in clothing tricking one another out of food of one sort or another. The hero was a hare and the villain a bear. But on reading this book I was in for a shock. A staple of the Brer Rabbit tales is the idea that sometimes luck and laziness go hand in hand. Brer Rabbit is forever tricking the other animals into doing his work for him rather than the other way around.

Great lessons about how vegetables grow, and which part we eat (tops, bottoms, middles). Tops & Bottoms (Caldecott Honor Book) by Janet Stevens - the kids LOVED this. McDermott, G. Hare solves his family’s problems by tricking rich and lazy Bear in this funny, energetic version of an old slave story. With roots in American slave tales, Tops & Bottoms celebrates the trickster tradition of using one’s wits to overcome hardship. “As usual, Stevens’ animal characters, bold and colorful, are delightful. . . . It’s all wonderful fun, and the book opens, fittingly, from top to bottom instead of from side to side, making it perfect for story-time sharing.”--Booklist

  • We used this book as a springboard for education about Michigan's vegetable farmers at our corn maze last year. Teachers loved the book, many had used it for years to teach 4-8 year olds about crops growing on top, in the middle and on the bottom of a plant. We had stations throughout our maze with veggie information. Young visitors had a card with a game to do as they found the stations, so when they emerged from the maze their field trip was both aMAZEingly fun, as well as meeting science and nutrition curriculum goals.

  • This is one of our favorite books. The illustrations are beautiful. Aside from the “tops and bottoms” storyline, the concept is reinforced through the book's unique binding (spine is at the to vs. to the left). It’s very fun and different. The story is great and teaches a valuable lesson; you need to work for what you want and cleverness and hard work pays off. I highly recommend this book. It’s enjoyable for children and adults alike.

  • Beautifully illustrated, with the tops and bottoms concept reinforced by the book's unique binding (spine is at the top vs. to the left). Teaches economics, entrepreneurship, morals and gardening all at once - in a fun way. I bought this copy for my 6 and 3 year-old grandchildren, but encountered it first working with 3rd graders in a Junior Master Gardener curriculum. This clever tale appeals to all ages - children and adults. No wonder it was selected as a Caldecott Honor Book.

  • This is my favorite children's book. The artwork is beautiful, hence the Caldecott Award.

The story is about poor Rabbit who is struggling to care for his family while his lazy neighbor Bear is sitting on an empty plot of farm land. Rabbit makes a deal with Bear that if Bear let's him plant on the farm he will split all the crops in half and Bear wouldn't have to do any of the work. Three times they make this deal and each time Rabbit takes the good half of the crop leaving the inedible parts to Bear. This book is a lesson that teaches you need to work for what you want and cleverness and hard work pays off.

  • It seems Mr. Rabbit is in a bit of a fix. After losing that race to Turtle, he's in a bit of a financial jam. So, he goes to Bear and makes a deal.
The Rabbit family will plant and harvest the crops on Bear's land. Rabbit will split the crops with Bear 50/50. All Bear has to do is decide which half - tops or bottoms - he wants.
Unfortunately, whether the crop is potatoes, lettuce, corn, or radishes, Bear keeps picking the "wrong half".
This is a hillarious story that kids of all ages will appreciate. For visual interest, the book is designed to flip from top to bottom (as opposed from left to right).
Janet Stevens' artwork alone is worth the cost of the book!
    Enjoy!

  • This is a very nice book in an unusual format. It opens from the bottom rather than from the side. It's sort of a take-off from the old story of the Little Red Hen, and has an excellent, gently-told moral that is easy for children to understand. The illustrations are excellent. Our little boy really likes it.

  • I love this book, all three of my girls absolutely loved it too. It's so creative, the rabbit family tricks the lazy old bear by giving him the first choice of having the tops or bottoms of the vegetables they're going to plant. The rabbit family plants accordingly, if the bear picks tops then they plant carrots, if he picks bottoms, then it's broccoli and so on. Definitely a favorite in our house!

  • This is a great book to teach diligence. I read it to my kids when they were little, now I bought it for my classroom. Came in great condition.
