Robert McCloskey (1914-2003) wrote and illustrated some of the most honored and enduring children's books ever published. He grew up in Hamilton, Ohio, and spent time in Boston, New York, and ultimately Maine, where he and his wife raised their two daughters. The first ever two-time Caldecott Medal winner, for Make Way for Ducklings and Time of Wonder, McCloskey was also awarded Caldecott Honors for Blueberries for Sal, One Morning in Maine, and Journey Cake, Ho! by Ruth Sawyer. He was declared a Living Legend by the Library of Congress in 2000.

He wrote and also illustrated nine picture books, and won two Caldecott Medals from the American Library Association for the year's best-illustrated picture book. Four of the nine books were set in Maine: Blueberries for Sal, One Morning in Maine, Time of Wonder, and Burt Dow, Deep-water Man; the last three were all set on the coast

Time of Wonder (Viking Kestrel picture books). I liked Robert McCloskey's sensory phrases. His story was ok because he did not really tell about the main characters.

Time of Wonder (Viking Kestrel picture books). He had really good illustrations,so I think he deserved the Caldecott Medal.

Robert McCloskey - Blueberries for Sal "we used our own tin buckets and blueberries to see what sound they made when dropped in. Time of Wonder by Robert McCloskey. A storm builds in on an island in Maine. This list is from the author of Beautiful Feet Books. This is her list for younger children but if you are looking for books to read about history over the summer I would pick from her lists.

Time of Wonder is a 1957 children's book written and illustrated by Robert McCloskey that won the Caldecott Medal in 1958. The book tells the story of a family's summer on a Maine island overlooking Penobscot Bay, filled with bright images and simple alliteration. Rain, gulls, a foggy morning, the excitement of sailing, the quiet of the night, and the sudden terror of a hurricane are all expressed in this book. This was McCloskey's second Caldecott, the first being Make Way for Ducklings in 1942.

Robert paints a picture of Island life. Most of my life I have wanted to live in a coastal town. I don't know what it is about life on the water, it seems so rhythmic.

The spell of rain, gulls, a foggy morning, the excitement of sailing, the quiet of the night, the sudden terror of a hurricane, and the peace of a Maine island as a family packs up to leave are shown in poetic language and vibrant, evocative pictures.
  • This book was perfect for my girls (5,3 and 3). It's innocent & dreamy and while written for a child I enjoyed reading to them. Perfect for summertime, sisters, & an adventurer's heart.

  • Difficult book for kids to read. More for 5 th grade.
Wording was a bit all over the place for kids. Nice illustrations.

  • We keep a lot of kids books in the house, and this is my favorite. In my opinion this is a children's literature masterpiece. The Nightwatch, Guernica, One Hundred Years of Solitude-- in that vein. Along so many dimensions it shows levels of storytelling, art, and craftsmanship that are so immaculate, I almost tear up trying to describe it any further.

It's a bit of a longer read-- for a child it is almost an epic-- which kind of requires an earlier bedtime, or a non-school night. Maybe that keeps it special for us.

For my kids, it might not be on their top 3 lists at any given time-- but those change every couple months anyhow. I think spending the time reading this to them, showing them the love of nature, and of a simpler world, and for the ones I read it to, far outweighs more fleeting pleasures (which of course are important as well). That's what it means to be a parent anyhow. So make it a part of your life.

  • If you have ever spent part of a summer on the coast of Maine you will thrill at this story of so many possibilities and the "wonder" of them.

  • Beautifully crafted and illustrated. Perfect for any children's literature collection.

  • Happy memories reading this. Got it to give as a gift.

  • Being a fan of Make Way for Ducklings, I was in search of other books by Robert McCloskey when I found this gem of a book. It is gentle, lyrical and so beautiful in it's prose and artwork. My children like to listen to it at bedtime and it lulls them to sleep each time. It is a book that celebrates nature and it's beauty. It's hard for me to describe but it touches me deeply, evokes memories of my childhood camping trips in the mountains.

  • This book is pure magic!!!! We adore the illustrations and the words are very poetic. I highly recommend it.
