Norman Bridwell, the creator of Clifford the Big Red Dog, a figure who looms as large in toddler lit as the great white whale does in the American canon, died on Friday in Oak Bluffs, Mass. on Martha’s Vineyard. He was 86. Kyle Good, a spokeswoman for Scholastic Books, which over the past half-century has published dozens of Clifford titles by Mr. Bridwell, confirmed his death without specifying a cause.

Product Title: Clifford The Big Red Dog ABC Paperback Childrens Book - (Normal Bridwell).

US illustrator Norman Bridwell, creator of the Clifford the Big Red Dog books, has died at the age of 86 following a fall at his home in Massachusetts. His loveable character first made an appearance in 1963 and went on to star in more than 40 stories, selling 120 million copies worldwide. Clifford's image has gone on to appear on merchandise and in US buildings, including the White House. Bridwell had completed two more books which are due for release next year.

As Clifford the dog walks through town, goes to school, plays at the park, and goes to the circus, young readers can identify the more than two hundred different objects that he sees
  • You can tell this story was written a long time ago by some of the toys represented in the story as well as a chalkboard in the classroom scene. Few kids nowadays are going to know what a chalkboard is, jax, or what a teeter toters at your local park is. The book has a lot of nostalgia in that regard. My 2 year old boy and I read this story a lot to grow his vocabulary. It still gives you great example of things your child will see in daily life. The Clifford books, along with Mercer Mayer and Berenstain Bears all offer great reading material for your beginning reader. The pages are bright and colorful and it is easy for the child to figure out what is going on in each page. I grew up on all 3 book series and am now enjoying reading Clifford to my own children. My son likes the park, animals, farm, beach and birthday scenes at the end. For how long this book is it definitely covers a lot of ground.

I would recommend the book and give it 4 1/2 stars. It seems to be helping my son he is picking up words right and left, but that could also be from his loud mouth big sister who hasn't had a quiet moment since she has been born. We have read this story a lot and gotten a lot of use out of it. Price should be no more than $5 to $8 dollars.

  • We all love Clifford.
That said, the adults hide this book after a few dozen "reads". The kid loves this book. Tons of objects with labels. But it is real tiresome for the reader. Big boredom. There's only so many ways you can invent plots for this one. It's almost as bad as a sound toy that doesn't have an off switch, volume control, or fun concept.

  • I received a very very old used and damaged book. supposed to be 5 sets. I only received one book!!! disappointed

  • Emily Elizabeth and her big red dog return with a rewarding twist: they educate about vocabulary in a fun way. Each page has a short descriptive sentence to complement a very descriptive colorful illustration that labels objects based on the subject of that page. For instance, on one page Emily says that her favorite color is red. On that page we see columns of 10 different colors (red included, with a picture of Clifford!) along with objects in each column that are that color.

If parents spend time with their children reading this book, then it can be a very valuable learning aid. This is not really meant to be a quick read (at least not in my opinion). The book is probably most appropriate for children aged 4-8. It is about 20 pages.

  • My 3 year old daughter just received this book. She adores it. She especially loves the page about different professions (although I'm surprised to see the woman nurse!) She is so pleased that she can identify so many of the objects, and enjoys learning about new ones too.
