  • I bought this for my son when he was pretty little. And he loved it even then. He enjoyed looking at the different pictures of animals and foods before we really started talking about which country the animal or food came from. At 4, he has a great interest in geography (wonder if that's inherited??!) and we hope to continue to foster that interest with the use of this atlas as well as others.

This world atlas has at least a small section devoted to each country and mentions something that the particular country is known for. It also has a short sentence about each state in the US. We've purchased another atlas (Natl Geographic United States Atlas for Young Explorers) to give more detailed info on the individual states, but the Priddy atlas does a nice job of pointing out something interesting about each state.

It also has a fold out map of the world, and each continent/region is color-coordinated with the individual pages.

    We love it!

  • After seeing so many good reviews about this book I bought it for my 8-year-old son; I do like the presentation of this book but I think the author should pay more attention to verifying the information cited in this book. Born and grew up in Taiwan, I am naturally very familiar with Chinese culture; when I checked the pages talking about China, Taiwan and Japan, I immediately saw some mistakes:

    1. The picture that author called "Counters for Mahjong, a popular Chinese game" is about Chinese chess pieces; Mahjong tiles look totally different.
    2. The picture that author called "Hong Kong" is actually Shanghai.
    3. The picture that author called "The National Palace Museum in Taipei" is actually the one in Beijing.
    4. The statement "motorcycles and cars are made in Japan" is not an accurate statement - how many cars and motorcycles are really "made" in Japan now?
    5. "Mount Fuji is a sacred mountain in the Shinto religion" is not wrong nor accurate. Mount Fuji is really a symbol of Japan and it means a lot to the general Japanese; the author shouldn't make it sound like Mount Fuji is only meaningful to certain religious followers.
    6. "Konichiwa" is not really equivalent to "hello" in English. Japanese use different greeting words at different time of a day, konichiwa is "good afternoon" and they have different terms for greeting in the morning or evening.

Maybe some people would say "what's the big deal?", I believe even books for kids, information can be simplified but should still be accurate - if we sincerely want to learn and respect other cultures.

Certainly I know very little about other countries and cultures, but if I could find those mistakes (I actually ignore some minor ones) in all the three countries that I checked, I wouldn't be surprised seeing more mistakes regarding other countries and cultures. I understand this is a book for kids and making an Atlas is not an easy work; but I think a book of such kind should be more carefully written - be it for kids or adults.

  • We recently got this for our five year old son and he loves it. He carries it everywhere. He has basically learned all the countries of the world and their flags from looking at this book constantly. Great quality art, nice metal spiral binding inside the hardcovers. He loved this so much we bought the 2010 edition that just came out in April. That was somewhat disappointing. See my review there. Smart Kids Picture Atlas Buy this one instead unless up to date population numbers are critical to you.

  • So far we really like this atlas. I got it for my 4 year old son and while some of it is beyond him, he likes to look at the pictures and it opens up fun discussions and helps him see how big the world really is. I'm sure it will only become more useful as he gets older. Seems to have something about every country (though I haven't technically counted them all :) Fun for all of us!

  • We are studying Geography for Homeschool this year. Other books were to mature for the kids. This one offered many pictures and fun facts. Great launching point for other books.

  • I've purchased many different atlases for my primary students. This is a particularly great one.

  • We are using this in our homeschool curriculum. it's great!
