J. T. begins to change when he discovers there is more satisfaction in caring for an injured cat than in listening to a stolen transistor radio. Illustrated with black and white photographs.
  • This book was beautiful and sweet. Based on the movie (and including pictures of various scenes) the book takes us on a journey with a little boy who doesn't understand right from wrong because he doesn't understand love. When he finds a cat and adopts it, he learns a valuable lesson about what it means to love others, and he teaches that lesson to his mother and to others as well. I bought this book because my husband told me about the movie, but I prefer books over movies. It was so good that I gave it to my 10-year old son for Christmas. I read it to him and he sobbed uncontrollably but wanted me to keep reading. I think even the 13-year old was touched. An excellent read for younger kids. More accessible than Old Yeller for younger readers, but same emotional rollercoaster.

  • I bought my first two copies of J.T. about 30 years ago. I had a small class of special needs students who sat in a circle and listened to me read the book to them. They were enthralled. I still have one of those copies. The pictures are stills taken from an after school special which I never saw. I, too, enjoyed this story of a poor, young, troubled boy who learns responsibility by caring for an injured cat. His creativity and caring grow throughout the novel as does his maturity.

When I saw that J.T. was still in print, I ordered two more for my current classes. I plan to talk up this book to my younger students as some of them do like to borrow books to read.

  • I loved the movie but sadly can't find. Settled for the book. Still a good story but it was short and a lot of pictures from the movie. Meh.

  • I haven't thought about this book in YEARS until I saw a story on CNN about a cat that had been abused and then rescued/loved. I remembered the story that I read many times in childhood as well as the movie based on the book. I would like to find a copy of the movie but have not been able to locate one(help Amazon!).
I wholeheartedly agree with the previous comments that this book should be introduced to kids today. I know that I cried each time I read the story--but it teaches great lessons about from love to the pain of loss.
I look forward to my new copy arriving!

  • I read this years ago now have had all 3 children read it. I think this was our 3rd copy.

  • I read this book when I was a child...lately I have been searching for those long lost books! I am also reading Charlottes Web! I am taking a stroll down memory lane. I was so happy to find this book. It is really special now because I love cats. This is like the story of a boy and his cat--in the ghetto.Very heartwarming. A good children s book with lessons touching on love, courage and survival.

  • Super fast shipping. Exactly as described.

  • Great story for adolescents, especially city boys. Whenever I read this with my students, it leads to amazing discussions.
