by Patricia Wynne and Donald M. Silver. It gives incredible details of what goes on in one small square of woods. safety tips are included as well as supplies needed for collecting data while exploring. I teach second grade and use all of the Small Square books in my teaching.

Donald M. Silver, Patricia Wynne. I am really enjoying the One Small Square series - you don't actually have to have a "woods" near by because the illustrations are so complete and beautiful. One small square at a time, these "detectives" plunge deeper and deeper into ancient mysteries-without ever getting lost. Beautifully illustrated, Woods offers a picture field guide, a glossary-index, and a resource list. There are just enough facts that it's not overwhelming but if something seems extra interesting to the child you can use other resources to continue exploring.

by Donald M. Silver & illustrated by Patricia J. Moving from the ferns, owls, bats, wood rats, and crayfish found in the half light near a cave's entrance to the fungi, blind salamanders, colorless isopods, and sightless fish deep within, Silver presents a typical cave's geological formations, plants, and animals and goes on to tell how cave residents find food and to introduce other kinds of caves

  • Love how meaty these thin books are. They are packed with all kinds of information and projects for your kiddo. There is a lot of text, so consider it for 3rd/4th/5th graders if they are going to be reading it on their own. The 3rd graders may need a little help if they are a struggling reader. But if you have a science/nature loving kiddo, I have found nothing that improves their reading more than allowing them to read about what intrigues them. :-) oh - Great illustrations as well.

  • Fun way to introduce biomes to little ones with delightful projects to enhance learning.

  • We used this as a stepping off point for an ecology unit in homeschooling for a 6th grader. Even though the book is geared for younger kids, my son enjoyed the book and pictures, and he was inspired to make his own square, which he's visited several times already.

  • I rated this five stars because I think this book is going to be amazing for our family once my toddlers get a little older. At the moment, they're just too young to focus on all the information on each page.

  • Great product and service!

  • Full of activities for your young ones to help in appreciating the environment in which they live as well as packed with information your average adult may not even have known or had long forgotten. Can't recommend this series highly enough! Only wish they had similar ones which explained political, religious and social processes of the world! No, really, that would be quite excellent.

  • Too late for this year but I will use this next year for my 1st grade science to expand the seasonal nature study that I use now.

  • Everything you could possibly want in a reference book for kids, and I love it too. I now have 5 of the set!!!
