His concept of the golden rule is to treat the person insulting you as a friend rather than an enemy, and not to get defensive or upset. Following his online advice, I told my daughter: If they say they don’t want to play with you, say very politely, ‘It’s a free country. if you don’t want to play with m.

These genres have cover design styles that were established decades ago. Since the goal of your cover is to sell books, the cover of a commercial title should follow, or at least evoke, the standard bearers of its particle genre. A book cover has three mandatory parts: the front cover and the back cover, connected by the spine. A hardback book’s pages are sewn or glued into a case made of cardboard which is then covered with cloth or paper. The paper cover wraps around the book and includes flaps on either side.

Is your child being bullied on a daily basis and all their efforts to make it stop aren't working? Have you informed the school authorities about the problem, only to discover that the bullies blame your child and are now calling them a snitch? Wouldn't it be great if your child were empowered to solve their problems with bullies all by themselves so that the torment and the battles with the school could finally be over? This book may very well be the answer you are desperately looking for. It is designed to teach your child (or yourself) how to make the bullying stop, without needing anyone else s help and without getting anyone in trouble. This way they don't get labeled informers and prevent a revenge response. (The book is also helpful for adults who are being bullied.) Bullies to Buddies: How to Turn Your Enemies into Friends, is a clearly written primer in basic psychology that makes it easy to understand the dynamics of bullying and how to use that understanding to easily and quickly stop being bullied on their own, often even turning their former bullies into buddies. It can also be used as a social skills textbook in school. It is based on time-honored principles that are taught by all major schools of psychology and psychotherapy, including cognitive behavior therapy, rational emotive behavior therapy, Adlerian psychology and positive psychology. It is also consistent with the teachings of all major religions and systems of philosophy. The book makes a unique contribution to both psychology and ethics by explaining how the Golden Rule works scientifically. When your child becomes a social winner, their self-image as well as the way others see them improves. They become more popular because kids are no longer embarrassed to be seen associating with the big loser. You are also likely to find your child's academic functioning improving because they can go back to concentrating on learning. The book teaches how to handle all the common types of bullying, such as verbal insults including those of a sexual and racial nature, rumors, taking of possession, social exclusion, cyberbullying and hitting/pushing that don t cause injury. It also teaches how to get along better with siblings, teachers and parents. It has become common to label all aggressive behavior, from eye-rolling to rape and murder, as bullying. This book explains the difference between bullying, which is an inevitable phenomenon that we all deserve to learn how to handle on our own, and criminal behavior, which should be handled by the authorities.
  • I'm a licensed psychotherapist and am always reading. This book was recommended by a clients principal so I decided to check it out.
Bullies to Buddies is clearly written and the idea behind it is simple: don't make yourself so much of a target and you won't be bullied as much. It's designed to be read with your children and teaches them how to turn a phrase, come up with quick and witty come backs to common insults such as "you're gay" etc... It teaches kids not to be victims. It's written in easy to understand language that both you and your children can understand.

The reason why I gave this book 3/5 stars is because this is not something that would work with kids being dangerously bullied. One of the concept is to not react when pushed around or picked on. Many of my clients are in school in rough areas and are given black eyes, pushed down stairs, robbed... For cases such as these, I would not recommend the books approach and there is no alternative provided.

Yes the books concept of survival of the most fit is still in play, however, the kid in being bullied not reacting to getting punched in the face is a. unlikely and b. not safe.

Additionally, the book does not discuss "gut feelings" and the different between "tattling" and "telling", something I believe is important for young children to know.

Finally, I have a hard time seeing middle school and high school age children reading this book due to the kid-friendly language. Though the concepts could work for kids that age, the writing is geared towards much younger children, and I believe the message would be lost and the book put down before they're able to get anything out of it.

  • I don't agree with the material.

  • This book was recommended to me by an amazing psychiatrist. It's a great read for kids as well as parents. Bullying has gotten so bad in schools, so I got this for the whole family to read. I would recommend this book to all parents, to teach kids how to prevent/stop bullying, and to prevent them from becoming a bully themselves!

  • If you are worried about your child being bullied in school or even if you are in the workplace, this book will help so much! I found it to be a blessing in disguise!

  • Very well written, clear and concise. We bought them for our two youngest grandchildren who are having some problems at their Private School.
We felt it was worth getting them one each.

  • Good for kids

  • This book is a way for you to understand why your child is being bullied, and great to use with them to practice what they would say or do in a bullying scenario. Good stuff. Highly recommend it.

  • The techniques Kalman explains are simply those used by people who don't get bullied. He makes those things available to children who haven't worked it out for themselves. The book talks to a young person who is having bullying issues and should be read from that perspective. It is not one of those old fashioned anti-bullying manuals which are so often of no practical use. I have used these techniques in High Schools in the UK, and the students really do take and relate to the approach.
