4-6. Astronaut Glenn is profiled in a short, succinct book with an abundance of black-and-white photographs.

4-6. Glenn led a crowded life (fighter pilot, test pilot, astronaut, businessman, politician, and then astronaut again when he was in his seventies), and the slim volume doesn't do justice to all his accomplishments. Still, exciting and crucial events, such as the Mercury spacecraft's nerve-wracking descent into the atmosphere after part of its heat shield was damaged, are fully recounted.

  • This helped a lot with our grandson's Ohio Studies project! Lots of photos and information!

  • This is 60 page book, written for grade level 4 and up. It is large enough that the print and the pictures are easy enough for most 4th graders to read it on their own. However even adults would probably enjoy and learn some new information about John Glenn from reading it.
There are pictures that you do not see very often; but some pages have an illustration/picture background which is not very clear to see.

The book gives information about Glenn's childhood and of course of Annie, his childhood sweetheart that he married. All parts of his career are covered from learning how to fly, his enlistment in the marines as a pilot, his career as an astronaut and politician and back to an astronaut.
John Glenn's philosophy can be summed up in his quote, "If you ever have an opportunity to do something bigger than yourself, seize the opportunity.

This is an excellent book to learn something about John Glenn and his life. The pictures are well done and labeled and there is a small index.
Young readers and those who are older and fascinated in recent American history or the space program would enjoy this well done book.
