About Cynthia Rylant and Preston McDaniels. For our beautiful daughters, Abby and Elizabeth. McD. On a cliff far above the blue waters of the ocean there stood a solitary lighthouse, and in this lighthouse lived a family. They were: Pandora, the cat; Seabold, the dog; and Whistler, Lila, and Tiny, three mouse children. This family had not always been together. They once were scattered far and wide, and none had ever guessed they would find one another one day. For many years Pandora had lived all alone at the lighthouse, bearing her loneliness so she might save others by keeping the light.

  • We have four paperbacks and one hardcover release from this series. Every illustration in each of the paperback releases are almost non-existent, faint. The illustrations in the one hardcover are all vivid, high-contrast. The books themselves we read aloud to my two-and-a-half year old son. He enjoys them immensely. There is very little going on in each of these stories. One could sum an entire book in one sentence: two lost mice get escorted home by an eagle. Really, there is not much more to any of the five stories we have. At the beginning of each book is a recap of The Storm (the first book in the series)--that gets old, repetitive. My toddler enjoys the stories. I enjoy reading to him. They are no comparison to 'The Wind in the Willows', but I have found them to be the closest match when looking for books for a toddler with personified animal characters. We are glad we have them though we wish we purchased just the hardcover releases for the illustration quality.

  • Cynthia Rylant is a marvelous author and obviously quite prolific. She is the author of the "Poppleton," "Henry and Mudge," and the "Cobble Street Cousins," series as well as numerous other books. I bought this particular series for my nieces (ages 4 and 7). They are short, almost novellas, but Rylant does not "talk down" to her audience instead exposing our young ones to higher level vocabulary. The adventures the Lighthouse Family have, especially the three orphaned/adopted young mice, are exciting, but quiet; no extreme violence, fearful chases or shoot 'em up. They make great bedtime reading.

  • This series is a wonderful treasure to share with your children. Read the first one first, The Storm. It introduces you to the characters and develops the story line. After that, the rest can be read out of order and they will still make sense. There are 5 books, I believe in the series.

This book in particular is really good because the mice children get lost and the eagle helps them get back. It is a good book to help you talk to your children about getting lost and what to do. It isn't too scary for young children, but it does help them understand what it means to be scared when if they were to get lost.

    I highly recommend this book!!
