Seven-year-old Mark helps his grandmother and other family members run their seaside hot dog stand and then has a surprise at the end of the day.
  • Night of the Moonjellies

This is a nice book. A boy stays with his grandparents for the summer. He helps them work their food stand at the beach. He finds some interesting things on the beach on his way to the stand. Grandma sets it aside until later. Then after a busy day she has a surprise for him. She has arranged to go for a boat ride that night. They have hot chocolate to warm up. Then they get to the right spot. The ocean comes alive with light as they are surrounded by moonjellies. The boy releases the one he found on the beach that morning.

This was apparently a true story. There is information at the end, about the stand and the family who worked it for so many years. It conveys a hard working family and a boy who is valued for his contribution.

  • My kids love reading and re-reading tris book. It's timeless and enjoyable. Part of the Five in a Row curriculum.

  • I bought this for a friend who said she wanted a copy for her Grandchildren. Her daughter had loved the book as a child and she wanted the book to read to her Grandchildren. She was thrilled with it and couldn't wait for the next opportunity to read the book to her Grandchildren,

  • Yes, this story ends with moonjellies, but it's mostly about a boy's day working in a seaside burger stand with his grandmother and extended family. My kids love it -- the author really brings the burger stand alive and shows the connection between himself and his grandmother. The picture on the cover might make you think that the book is all about the magical moonjellies -- just be aware that this only comes at the end.

  • My 4-year-old granddaughter, whose Mommy grew up in Maine, loved this book. We read it several times each day when she came to visit. She was intrigued that the cover illustration was repeated within the story. I liked the artwork, so colorful and seemingly simple, but including many thoughtful details. This story is written in a way that appeals to both children and adults.

  • loved the book. #supportlocalartists

  • Charming story with beautiful illustrations. I bough two copies as newborn gifts.

  • The author brings his childhood reflections to life and captures the sense of magical wonder found in the hearts and minds of young children. We are keeping this one for any future grandchildren and recommend it to anyone wanting a list of highly recommended children's literature.
