Maggie and the Pirate book.

Maggie and the Pirate book. In the books that Keats wrote and illustrated, he used his special artistic techniques to portray his subjects in a unique manner.

Ezra Jack Keats was an American writer and illustrator of children's books. He was one of the first children’s book authors to use an urban setting for his stories and he developed the use of collage as a medium for illustration.

In Maggie and the Pirate, Keats is at the height of his artistry. The story is action-packed, yet also moving and beautifully rendered. Maggie, a little girl in a remote rural community, has her pet cricket stolen by a strange boy, and she and her friends track him down

In Maggie and the Pirate, Keats is at the height of his artistry. Maggie, a little girl in a remote rural community, has her pet cricket stolen by a strange boy, and she and her friends track him down. She overcomes her fear and confronts the boy, and in their tussle, the cricket drowns. What happens next shows us, with the directness of a child’s gaze, how our humanity connects us to one another and the world. Look Beyond the Book. Maggie and the Pirate. Mystery, bravery and friendship on the bayou.

Unlike Keats' city slums, this palm-treed, riverside shantytown has a ramshackle insouciance.

Keats is the late award-winning children's author known for his dreamy urban stories about small moments. Even better is the longer "Maggie and the Pirate," about a girl whose pet cricket is stolen by a pirate.

Keats is the late award-winning children's author known for his dreamy urban stories about small moments. Most kids love his books, and most kids will love these musicals, starting with "Apt. 3," a relatively brief combination of dance and text, adapted by Davidson Lloyd, about two boys waiting for their mother in a noisy building. Now, this may not sound like much of a story, but adapter Winnie Holzman (who wrote the book for Wicked ) has impressively teased out most of Keats' drama and humor.

When Maggie's pet cricket is stolen, she and her friends embark on a search for the "pirate" thief which ensues in a small tragedy but the making of a new friend.
  • My daughter is only two,but for some reason adores Maggie and the Pirate. Maybe it for the lovely illustrations which capture the southern bayou so well- they are full of Colorado but have a hot sticky quality too them as well. They are very different from Keats work in his Peter series. Maybe she loves it because it is so dualities heavy. I know she adores the friendship of Paco, Katie and Maggie. I also know she loves that foreshadowing is done in the illustrations and not words. Whatever the reason dad and I are grateful because the book has a depth to it and its not so had reading it for a hundredth time. A word of warning. The book does have a death in it (a cricket) but its done beatifully just want to let you know its a little unnervingg the first read....

  • I love every book that Keats has written, and the illustrations are wonderful. So glad I kept it after my kids were born because it is now out of print.

His illustrations always have racial diversity, and often urban settings.

  • This was my daughter's favorite book growing up and now is her son's favorite bedtime story.

  • My first graders really liked this story.

  • My daughter requested a book about Maggie and the Pirate, for Christmas. She wanted to read it to her 3 and 6 year daughters. So I bought it for her. What I've received is a 7" by 9" paper back book. I would call it a pamphlet. Twenty pages max. I would have expected an 8" by 10" book for $44.99. The price printed on the cover is $3.95 US / $4.95 CAN. The company that shipped this book to me is, The book community, 1201 SE 7th Ave, Portland, OR , 97214-3459.
I notice that it is listed as a ("A Blue Ribbon Book). Maybe that means "we have the right to rip you off".
Did you ever get that sick feeling in the pit of your stomach that you have been ripped off and there is nothing that you can do about it? I do.

  • I purchased a copy of Maggie and the Pirate to donate to our school library in honor of a retired Kindergarten teacher. The used book arrived on time but in more "well loved" condition than I was lead to believe. Very expensive for a very used book.

  • Book said it was in new great condition but the book that came was an old library book with tattered edges and dulled pages. Wouldn't consider it new or in great condistion. Good thing it was only 3$.

  • Kids will love this book... Until the pet cricket dies!! What is the author thinking? This is really not a very good kids book and Amazon should rethink adding it to their Alexa bedtime story app. The story is sad and not good for children.
