Herself and Janet Reachfar. Mairi Hedderwick is one of Scotland's best known and best loved illustrators and authors. From the Katie Morag stories to her adult titles, Eye on the Hebrides, Highland Journey and Sea Change, she is perennially popular with all ages. Mairi Hedderwick was born in Gourock, Scotland

Mairi Hedderwick was born in Gourock, Scotland. At seventeen she took a job as a mother's help on the Isle of Coll in the Hebrides, beginning a life-long love affair with islands and their small communities. Her children were brought up there and now some of her grandchildren. Mairi's island world is delightfully reflected in the imaginary island of Struay where her perennially popular Katie Morag stories are set. As well as creating children's books Mairi writes and illustrates travel books for adults, including Highland Journey and Sea Change (Birlinn 2009).

Ava Lawton can’t believe her run of bad luck

Ten years ago US Marine Sebastian Hunter was a teenager in love with a married woman-a woman who broke his heart. Kicking his heels in a desk job in Geneva, he’s given the chance to get back to the action. Ava Lawton can’t believe her run of bad luck. It’s supposed to be an exciting time in her life: fresh out of college, living in a new state, with a new job, and away from her family at last. But when she’s forced to quit her job, everything falls apart quickly. Suddenly, she’s alone in a crowd, with no one to turn to.

George and Tom, who worked on the farm called 'Reachfar', were Janet's greatest friends. 'Herself' was what they called Janet's Granny when she spoke in a special voice. When it was Herself who ordered George and Tom to bring the sheep off the hills in the unexpected snow, Janet went into the warm barn with Fly, her collie. But she couldn't help thinking about the poor cold sheep on the East Hill. If she just opened the gate, Fly could easily bring the sheep into the shelter of the trees, and she wouldn't be going out, not really out on to the forbidden East Hill . . . But of course she did, and what came of it, in the end, changed Herself back into Granny, loved and loving - and perhaps even a little magical.
  • Jane Duncan is my favorite author, and I own all of her "My Friend" books. If you haven't read them, get them if you can, they're wonderful. This book is for children, but I loved it because it was another book from Duncan. I plan to give it to a granddaughter -- good book.

  • I love Jane Duncan's childrens books. They are a series of wonderful stories of the life of young Janet Reachfar and her life on her family's croft in the Scottish Highlands. I highly recommend them as great reading for your children. Great service to Australia from Amazon!

  • Lovely books. Recommend you read them to your children and grand children, lovely that they are being reprinted. Thank you
