In Olofsson's version, he asks for a meal at a monastery. But the monks are fascinated by the jester and ask him to perform. He begins his tricks, and by means of his flute, leads the way to the chapel where he jumps on the high altar and proceeds with the show. The Abbott, who has retired to his study, hears the noise and follows it to the chapel.

Helena Olofsson, Kjersti Board. A little jester brings about big change. When the world was a thousand years younger and minstrels traveled the roads, there was a monastery in the French countryside. The monks who lived there made books in which they painted lovely pictures. But the most beautiful picture, to them, was the painting of the weeping Madonna above the altar. One evening a jester boy comes to the monastery and is offered shelter. To thank the monks, he begins to juggle and dance.

A little jester brings about big changeWhen the world was a thousand years younger and minstrels traveled the roads, there was a monastery in the French countryside. The monks who lived there made books in which they painted lovely pictures. But the most beautiful picture, to them, was the painting of the weeping Madonna above the altar. One evening a jester boy comes to the monastery and is offered shelter. To thank the monks, he begins to juggle and dance. The stern Abbot wants to throw him out for disrespectful behavior, but soon the monks notice that something wonderful has happened. It is nothing less than a miracle, and one that will change the monastery – and the weeping Madonna – forever. Blending medieval and modern pictorial language, Helena Olofsson’s warmhearted story, accompanied by beautiful, distinctive illustrations, is about the transformative power of laughter and creativity.
  • This engaging children's story, originally written in Swedish, retells a lovely medieval narrative. It is beautifully illustrated with pseudo-medieval features that make the printed pages resemble folios in manuscripts. The setting is a French monastery in the Middle Ages. The central figure is a little boy, but much of the drama relates to a Madonna. The heart of the tale is a positive message about the power of art to bring joy and compassion.
If you enjoy interpreting and comparing books, you could read this one alongside R.O. Blechman's The Juggler of Our Lady, Barbara Cooney's The Little Juggler, Tomie dePaola's The Clown of God, and Mark and David Shannons' The Acrobat & the Angel. An exhibition "Juggling the Middle Ages" on all these publications and more will be held in Washington, DC in 2018-2019.

  • I was looking for folklore books from Scandanavia/Denmark. This isn't it.

This is more of a "be nice to people and the Virgin Mary will clap for you" book.

Great illustrations -- really neat use of shadows and illumination-style pages.
