Martha Weston (Illustrator). Nate the Great books aren't that great. I hated them when I was a kid, yet I would always read them. The endings of the books were always the same, they figured out what or who did it. And where are Nate's parents?

  • I have read numerous Nate the Great books with my kids, and The Owl Express is our favorite. Nate the Great books are fabulous for early readers who are ready to move from picture books to their first chapter books. They are also great read aloud books for preschoolers. Right now, I'm reading the books to my three year old, and I will have him read them to me again when he reaches that level of reading.

The great thing about the Nate the Great series, is that they are cleverly written, and the writing has a strong tone and personality (which I find generally lacking in the early chapter book genre in general). The characters in the book have specific character traits that are consistent throughout the series and fun to discuss and analyze with kids.

Nate the Great on the Owl Express is our favorite because of a few reasons. One is that my kids love owls, so there's that. But it also sets up the mystery in a fun way and provides a couple of clues that children may catch onto and may help them try solving the mystery on their own. The story also features a written communication which is misunderstood, which can be a fabulous discussion topic for kids in understanding how tone of voice and non-verbal clues can be important to understanding someone's message, as well as how written communication can be misunderstood so it's important to write clearly. Last, the story is set on a train, which is an exciting setting that kids naturally are fascinated with.

I have read this book with both boys and girls and it was loved by all. My girls did not fall in love with the Olivia Sharp book series starring Nate's cousin Olivia, who is featured in this book, but they were fans of every Nate the Great mystery.

  • This series is awesome!! It is captivating and has enhanced my 5 year old grandson's curiosity. It has taught him use his problem solving skills. I have purchased every book in the series.
