  • An incredible and beautiful book. I received my copy as a birthday gift over 30 years ago, and read that same copy to my own daughter. Puts the reader in touch with the ideas of love, compassion and empathy in a very powerful way. The illustrations are in watercolour and are breathtaking. The greatest childrens books not only entertain but instruct and tap into the heart, This title is so much more than just a story.

  • In this magnificent book there is a family called the Quigleys, that live on a farm that has two useless donkeys named Garibaldi and Peccadillo. The father wants to get rid of the donkeys but the mother and the children are in love with them. When a gigantic storm comes the donkeys are stranded on an island because of the rising floodwaters. When the father and the children try to get the donkeys to swim the donkeys start to get stubborn and will not move. The children hear from the radio that the floodwaters are starting to diminish and that the rain has stopped. When the children cannot sleep because of the baying donkeys they go out in their father's boat and keep the donkeys company all night long.

  • I used to read this wonderful book to my children; teared up every time I did. I now look forward to reading it to my grandchildren.
