Henri Rousseau's "Le Charme" - Self-made, self-taught, an artist who held a day job his whole life and invented an enchanted and relevant world of his own that's dreamy and delightful and full of surprises. Id like somehow to find quality artwork like Rousseau, but less threatening. He was very well-known for his many paintings depicting.

Painter Henri Julien Félix Rousseau was ridiculed during much of his lifetime for painting in a naïve or primitive manner, but eventually, with the endorsement of Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and other younger artists, was considered a self-taught genius. His best-known work depicts imaginary jungle scenes inspired by illustrated books and the botanical gardens in Paris, but he also painted smaller scenes of the city and its suburbs.

  • I got the book for the high quality images of Rousseau's works. The images are crowded out by a little too much notes and commentary, often fluffy or unnecessary. Much of the writing is good and the large images that there exist are worth the price of the book.

  • Good reference book to have on hand.

  • I love this book...it is great for kids-and adults as well. A nice little sample of Rousseau's work along with charming text.

  • Great!

  • Book was in great condition and just as described!

  • Cheesiest book I've seen in a long time. Wish I hadn't opened the one I did, now stuck with it. Now I know why shop by mail is so dubious

  • This book deserves 5 stars because it does a fine job of introducing kids to a great artist, Henri Rousseau. I am a teacher and I can say that children absolutely love his jungle paintings. They also love this book and others by the author. Please do not be swayed by the other bad review--this is a good addition to a home, classroom, or public library. Also, do not worry about whether the book is inappropriate--it's fine!

  • I have three other books from this series and have read them all to my primary school students (1st-3rd grade). This book, however, was not appropriate for that age group, and was a terrible purchase. The story was too long and confusing, too much information that was not written in a manner that was interesting for children, it talked about how he spent time in jail, how he lied, how he knew it didnt matter if he payed attention and did well in math and science because all he wanted to do was be an artist... nice message!
