However, the Baron considered these publications an interference of his narrative and wasn’t particularly happy about it. Moreover, the books earned him the title of Baron of Lies, which probably upset him even more. But up until today, everyone else appears to enjoy the Baron’s stories. Nowadays he is known as a literary and movie character. The ride on the cannonball, the glorious duck hunt and the horse that was tied to a church tower are well-known across Germany. In his hometown you can experience some of the parts of the stories. A big fountain in the town center recreates three of the stories.

The stories about Münchhausen were first collected and published by an anonymous author in 1781. An English version was published in London in 1785, by Rudolf Erich Raspe, as Baron Munchhausen's Narrative of his Marvellous Travels and Campaigns in Russia, also called The Surprising Adventures of Baron Munchhausen. It is not clear how much of the story material derives from the Baron himself; however, it is known that the majority of the stories are based on folktales that have been in circulation for many centuries before Münchhausen's birth.
