At fifteen years old, he has not yet found his niche. British children's author and two time winner of the Carnegie Medal, Janet Marjorie Mark also taught art and English in Gravesend, Kent, was part of the faculty of Education at Oxford Polytechnic in the early 1980s and was a tutor and mentor to other writers before her death from meningitis-related septicaemia.

Jan Mark (1943-2006) was amongst the finest authors to emerge in the second golden age of children's books. She won the Carnegie Medal twice (for her first novel, Thunder and Lightnings and for Handles) and received a host of other commendations and prizes. A former teacher, she spent many years working in schools, alongside her full-time writing

The idea for Puffin was proposed in 1939 by Noel Carrington who met with Allen Lane, the founder of Penguin Books, and put to him an idea for a series of children's non-fiction picture books. The first picture books were published in 1940.
